Can I copy the whole content of my competitor site?

Hello warriors. I want to create a micro niche website. I checked my competition and it's super easy to rank. Ranking #1 is also a micro niche site, with less than 10 ezine backlinks. I was wondering, would it be okay to totally copy the whole content from that site and WP unique that in mine? I mean, not SEO wise, but more to "safety" wise. Could he sue me for doing that?

uhhhhhh. NO. Did you create that content? Do you have the PLR rights? Why does this sound ok to you? What if I went and copied your whole site after you made it. How would you feel?

I definitely would not do that. First of all you could have a lawsuit on your hands. Secondly Google doesn't like copied content. They don't want two websites that are the same. What every you do, don't do that. Copying their SEO tactics is ok though. This means using similar keywords in your headers, descriptions etc, and even finding out where they get their back links from and getting them too.

Yeah, this isn't the best strategy. If you plan to rank for the same keywords he is going for, you don't stand much chance.

Do you think google is dumb enough to put the same content in the top ten twice? Their algorithm prevents this from happening.

You could go for similar keywords though and stand a chance but this is completely unethical and can have some long term effects like plagiarism, which can ruin your chances for ranking that site completely.

Put some effort in it, nothing comes for free these days.

In certain parts of the world, people do, and they don't get in trouble....Which may be exactly why he is asking.

The answer to almost everyone of US is an absolute NO. To people in other cultures it might be much more of a "gray" issue than we see it as "black and white".

The correct answer has been stated numerous times - IT IS NO.

Supposedly, the only (insert your favorite bad adjective here) question is one
that is not asked. At least I heard that a lot in the U.S., heh.

Goes to show some things aren't as obvious as some people like to think. Why

Seriously, a one hundred word page written well, or even half reasonably, will out perform a thousand word page that looks like a japanese - english translated manual.

It's never okay or right to steal someone's content.

The only way you can use content that another person created is if they give you permission to do so, if you have PLR rights to the content, if you have resell or master resell rights to the content.

Just because you like someone's content or the fact that their content is ranking high doesn't mean you can steal it and use it as your own.

The way to get to the top is by working hard and making it, not by stealing someone's else's hard work.

Granted, a lot of people honestly believe it's okay to just go copy content from the web that doesn't belong to them ... it's not okay.

About a year ago, a person emailed me letting me know they lifted a lot of my content from one of my sites and posted it to their site. Yeah, she actually emailed me and let me know she had stolen my content lol. She thought she was being kind by letting me know.

I thanked her for letting me know and gave her one day to get it all down before I contacted her hosting company and her domain registrar. She freaked out, apologized profusely over and over, and had it down within the hour.

I was so back and forth between mad for her stealing and laughing that she told me what she did .... made me all dizzy for at least an hour!

Okay so maybe you were clear on this already, but are you talking about content or design?

As far as content is concerned, I'm going to have to say no, but on the brighter side if you do mean the design, just have your designer do a "similar" site that inlcude the feautures you like about the one you're considering coping. Like maybe the optin form for example...or the way the video is set up/positioned, things of that nature.
    But copying content...I wouldn't dare.

            Kay,

With the greatest respect, I think what Barry mean't was that certain countries have a reputation for copying and counterfeiting various products.

I don't think he mean't stealing was ok in some cultures and I'm not excusing anyone doing what the OP is suggesting, on the contrary, it's disgraceful.

What I mean is, certain countries do think it's fine or at least turn a blind eye to copying/counterfeiting certain items. I consider this stealing like you do but in their culture perhaps copying doesn't have the same meaning as stealing and perhaps the laws that govern these places are particularly badly implemented.

This Sky News page may help better explain what I mean and the fact that if you type into Google "Counterfeit goods China" you'll see that 2/3 of all counterfeit goods eminate from there. This to me, in a very tightly run communist state, suggests a distinct difference between our version of copying/stealing and theirs. It's still illegal but this is a quote from the page...

Fakes are illegal in China, and the government regularly announces 'strike hard' campaigns, ostensibly aimed at stamping out the trade. But in reality, police turn a blind eye. The business is simply too lucrative to shut down.
That doesn't excuse it, certainly not in my eyes but it might help explain better what I think Barry was getting at. Or I hope he was.

The point is, if they turn a blind eye because it has benefits ("too lucrative"), doesn't that make it acceptable to them or at least, excusable?

This reminds me of something that was somewhat similar which happened here in the US, where some online recipe site (the Cooks Source) just plagiarized many recipes from big food websites such as The Food Network, NPR, etc.

Cooks Source infringement controversy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The editor had the gall to state that stuff on the web was "public domain", and was free for anyone to use.

End result? The site has been taken down, and is no longer in existence!

Well it has been an entertaining thread, right from the topic title. Hope you aren't too sensitive, Hydroxide. We are all just learning and some days we learn more than others

It reminds me of line I always wanted to include with the copyright notice. "Is there life after death? Rip off the copy and find out!"

And the copyright notice might be a topic worth researching. A site doesn't need one, but most have them. As mentioned already, your host can be contacted and the site shut down quite quickly.

    Yes he can.

And worse yet, he can make life an absolute hell for you. Here's some of the smaller penalties you can get from doing this:

    -Web hosting terminated
    -Web traffic reduced to ashes

If you think that's not possible, it's highly doable and doesn't need lawyers getting involved.

Either way, you are cooked. So you should just focus on creating your own unique content instead.

I love how there's certain people on this forum that only post when drama is going on. I can predict it. People need to get a life and quit getting their rocks off on drama.

OP, don't copy the site. Stealing of any type is wrong and I'm sure you know wrong from right.

Am I too late to join in the fun?

Hydroxide, no offense but maybe you need to learn more things about the Internet and the way it works. Also please forgive me and others here who are making fun of your ignorance. Actually, you should have researched this question carefully before posting it in this forum, as many people here won't tolerate "dumb" questions.

My question is WHY would you even want to?

If you cannot create your own, you have no business owning a website.

    Where is the TROLL button?

I'm late to this thread (sorry) but I just had to share my story. Some a-hole copied my entire site content about 5 years ago (one of my more popular sites). I e-mailed him and he basically said, "What are you gonna do, I'm in the UK?"

Well my wife is a flight attendant here in the US and we get travel privileges. I was in the process of taking a trip over there when I had a better idea. I e-mailed his ISP and demanded that they take it down. They ignored me. So I e-mailed them again and again. This time I included images of my site and his, along with history of my site and his (his was brand new). I then said that if they didn't shut it down, I was going to really stir some **** up. I was going to report them, post the whole thing on the internet and/or hop on a plane and pay them a visit. - His site was offline the very next day.

To the original poster: If you use the Golden Rule in all the decisions you make, you will always do the right thing.

Not ethically right. Also when Google notices, it will be worst day for you.
