Do you pay for your Akismet Pluggin..??

INTERNET MARKETING

I tried to activate my Akismet pluggin for wordpress.

I go to get the Akismet "API" code at the site worpress recomends but when I fill in my intention to use this code for business and affiliate links, it asks for a 5.00 charge... I'm kinda tired of spendin money. but what do you guys/gals do??

No you get it for free - your account settings at wordpress.com should have it there for you. Not sure how you've got up a charge for it?

  No, I got the same thing the other day. Yes, it's already in WP, but to activate it, you have to have the API key, which is $5/mo for personal sites. ???!!!
  
  I'm not someone who refuses to spend money, but I've spent waaaay too much money on my biz in 2010. Now, I'm about to launch and feel like I'm being nickeled and dimed with this stuff. I'm looking for another alternative too.

I have Akismet on a whole list of WP blogs. I keep my API key stores in notepad and just cut and paste it for every new blog. I've never needed to pay anything.

There are other anti spam plugin around, try to search on wordpress plugin site.

I've few wp blogs and I don't have any problem with Akismet plugin. I know that there is a pro version that requires you to pay but you can always stick with the free one. I'm not sure what went wrong. But, if you need any help in this pls PM me. I'll try to help you with this.

  It is now a paid plug-in, guys. Yes, you can use the API key you already have for new blogs and it will work, but the license has changed so it's not legal to do anymore. Eventually, I'm sure they will figure out how to deactivate those who don't pay for their license or they'll get you when it's time to update again.

If you don't have the $5, use WordPress › Invisible Captcha « WordPress Plugins.

It's free and it protects from spam.

  I was shocked when I saw that Askimet wants - for the number of affiliate sites I will have - $150 a month from me.
  I went searching for other options and just downloaded WP Captcha Free.

  WP Captcha-Free generates a hash (aka token) based on several parameters like time (with a some cushion), post id, IP address, and browser user-agent which should not change between requests (within a short period of say a few seconds). When the comment form is posted the plugin uses ajax to get a hash value and adds it to a hidden field. On the server side it verifies if the hash is valid or not. It uses adds random salt to the hash so that it cannot be guessed.
  A combination of a time based hash and javascript (ajax) makes it almost impossible for any bot to bypass.
