What's the best way to get traffic on a new site

I've done some reading and it seems to me some of the popular methods of traffic generation are on the way out.

Word has it that Google is all but discounting directories. Which explains why my last purchase of a 1000 manual directory submission yielded no results.

I tried purchasing some social bookmarking - same results.

Squidoo lenses seem to be hit or miss. I got no traffic on my last site from squidoo lenses but I did make some sales off a squidoo link.

Matt Cutts from Google recently said that article submissions to article directories aren't the best first move for a new site. Which explains why I've seen no traffic or SE love from these activities - probably anyway. He didn't say, but maybe they perform better on an older site.

So I'm thinking maybe they are on to this pattern. A new site goes up and the next thing you know the only links to that site come from Squidoo, hubpages, article directories, link directories and social bookmarking. Probably isn't an authority site.

So what's everyone's opinion? In this day and age what are the best traffic generation techniques for a new website?

It seems like you are jumping from one thing to another because you don't get quick results. You need to focus on daily strategy of doing all the traffic methods that are talked about in this forum. You need to work them regularly and check to see which ones work best for you and are what you like to do. Remember that it takes time to really get loads of traffic.

Think outside the box... there are sooo many many ways to generate traffic without going down the same road everyone else tells you is the right way to go...

Give something away with your URL in it, and encourage others to also give it away... something desirable, like a Free Wordpress theme, with 'powered by... you' or a free e-book with links to your site, and tell everyone to give the ebook to their friends.

How about the offline world? Do you have a place to put flyers, like supermarkets? How about advertising on the Radio? TV?

I'm getting tired of everyone saying..."This is the best way to drive traffic"... because there is no 'best way'

Think for yourself and I'm sure you will come up with some killer traffic ideas.

Anyone wish to add their 'outside the box' traffic thoughts?

It seems you are inclined towards quick results.
The best option for your is PPC. Try out YSM alongwith Adwords for a mixed-breed traffic. These are all Targeted Traffic.. And THAT is what you should aim for, currently.

Get as much 'Targeted Traffic' as possible

The 'best way' to drive traffic to a new site is to pay for it.

You'll get faster results (sales) with Google PPC--assuming your site has good sales copy, ect.

Your site is just a tool to achieve a goal, and you don't need much traffic to achieve any goal you care to set, for a new site or an established one.

As the OPs have suggested, kick start your traffic with paid options -- PPC, ezine and forum advertising, banner ads.

Then, once you've worked out WHO is responding, find out what they really want and give it to them on your site.

Paid advertising is the fastest and simplest way to discover who your audience is -- you must know who they are, and what they need, before you can effectively sell anything at all to them.

Re traffic in general, don't worry about it. I'd rather have 50 visitors a day and 5 buyers than 5000 visitors and no buyers.

I wish you much success, and great traffic that converts. :-)

    Cheers
