fekin paypal! why no other online payment?

I've been having terrible trouble with paypal... I've been traveling allot, and it seems, every time I reach a new country, they lock my account!

Finding an actual phone number was a task, and when I finally got through, I told them not to do this again... but, of course they have.

Now, I'm in Haiti, and my accounts locked... I tried to buy an ebook off Lazy... but couldn't, and the price just keeps going up... which is fair enough, but annoying.

I have a moneybookers account... which is legit, but it seems paypal is king on here....

I haven't paid anyone with money bookers, but they claim on their site, that you can pay anyone, with an email address.... so, why would someone refuse a potential sale?

Are we all stuck using paypal forever?

If you're wondering why I've a moneybookers accout, well, my credit card company, in Ireland closed up... leaving me high and dry in China with no credit card... and as I'm on a career break from work, and Irish banks are pretty much closed for business, they only credit card I could get was a moneybookers mastercard...

Anyway, I'm just wondering, does anyone on here accept alternate payment to paypal? google checkout, moneybookers etc...

Paypal tos? Do you mean, their resolution centre?

They sent me a 4 diget code, in my credit card statement... the thing is, I'm in Haiti... so it's not very convenient for me to check my mail... I had to have my friend check through my mail... but he can't find the statement!

I also have to wait til monday, as they're only open Monday to Friday

I'd rather not use em... but I've no choice... I have to pay a deposit on a hotel in Hong Kong, using paypal of course....

Maybe I'll start my own online payment gateway.....

An easy solution is to use Paypal at home, but when you know you are going to travel, use a debit card from your bank instead of the PayPal debit card.

Have your mom or someone you trust log into PayPal once a week to transfer money to your bank from PayPal for you.

The solution is right in front of your face.

PayPal is wary of those who travel, but your bank is not as worried, because you occasionally go to their branch office in person.

Ah, another acronym to add to my ever growing collection.

Honestly, I don't think I've ever read a TOS... lots of tiny writing... all I've done is traveled to exotic destinations, which apparently paypal doesn't like.

I've no problem with security, as long as I can get back in, online, without having to route through offline mail....

I'll talk to a human on Monday and get it sorted... and will again ask them to stop doing this...

I think you should try writing or calling PayPal the next time you are traveling. Let them know you will be traveling. I heard that this can actually help you avoid their 'wrath'.

I had the same problem when I went to HongKong. Once IP is changed, you're in trouble. You need to contact them from time to time.....and long distance call is expensive

If you don't like Paypal, look into Google Checkout, I use it for most of my clients now.

I think you are not being fair to them. The fact is that PayPal is actually doing you a favor by doing that every time you login from a different country. I mean, most PayPal users don't login to their account from a different country everyday. This is simply to make sure your account hasn't been hacked by someone in another country.

I actually think you should be thankful to them for doing that, even if you did tell them not to do it.

Imagine if your account gets hacked and the hacker in another country starts using your PayPal, wouldn't you be pissed if PayPal didn't do anything about it?...

I understand what you're saying, but I asked them on a few occasions, not to do it... I let them know my travel plans... works for my credit card, but not for paypal.

        > You can ask them not to do it. Someone there might even agree. But the simple truth is that they aren't going to rewrite their automated security protocols to make things easier for a handful of users. It isn't personal, it's computers.

        > As for why PayPal and not other plans, it works well for the overwhelming majority most of the time. They were smart enough to get in bed with eBay at the height of the Beanie Baby craze, they made it easy for small merchants to take credit cards without a merchant account, and no other company has been able to get enough traction to unseat them as the provider of choice for this service.

I know it sucks when things get scrambled and it causes a serious PITA (Pain In The Ass - another acronym for your collection ). Easy to get frustrated when it happens to you.

But at this stage, until PayPal screws up enough things to make using someone else attractive to enough users, we're stuck with them...

You do know you can use a credit card when sellers use Paypal as their processor, don't you?

You need to contact them before you enter a new country and let them know then you won't have problems.

Anyway, it's a good thing that they're doing it and I would be disappointed if they weren't to do that. If you weren't travelling you wouldn't be happy if someone was logging into your account from a different country and PayPal didn't do anything about it.

If said credit card is connected to your PayPal account you can't without logging in, though.

Paypal have a monopoly. Still nobody can break. But Google checkout will be an alternative. We need a non country base system like LibertyReserve.

Such is the security-consciousness of PayPal that this is a pretty common problem. If you're travelling, they'll sometimes do that and not unlock it until you can them from your own home number (which may be a huge problem!).

It's essential to call them, and tell them in advance, really clearly, on which days you'll be in which countries, and get them to read it back to you. And even this isn't 100% reliable.

If travelling without doing this, you should assume that your account will be suspended.

I use PayPal all the time, but I quite like AlertPay, as a PayPal-substitute: it's improved greatly over the last couple of years.

MoneyBookers is my "third choice", but their customer service can be very disappointing, and it can often take them more than a week to reply to an email. (It feels nearly as unpleasant as trying to deal with Clickbank!).

It happen sometime with paypal. Try moneybooker as an alternative.
Really good service with multiple withdrawing options.
Direct debits and credits are also useful if your travel in differnt countries.

But before you move...maybe you can take some time telling PayPal that you are moving. That you are ready to:

    Change your address
    Upload copy of your ID
Upload new copy of proof of address

Most of the time it's people's own fault that their account is closed.

They think that they need open account and are ready to make money. It's not so easy. There's so much money laundering going on, so every time you move or change something...you need notify other side too. Your bank, PayPal, Tax Office etc.

And someone said here about "if your IP changes...you are in trouble". No you are not!
I spent Christmas with my family, over 2000 miles away. I used my PayPal there, to buy online, send money etc. My account is still open.
You can travel around the world and access your account, send money etc. You get into trouble if you link different bank accounts or credit cards to your PayPal account from different countries. PayPal don't know that you are not doing any money laundering.

I wonder if your paypal account is verified?

At any rate these are automated security measures and no one at Paypal can make a couple of keystrokes on the keyboard and make your account an exception to the rules.

I agree with using Google Payments as an alternative.
The Google name is well recognized compared to other Paypal alternatives.
Anyway it works well for me.
