Do I need a Privacy Policy?

My website atm is for the sole purpose of capturing emails. (Squeeze page & Thank you page)

Do I need a privacy policy somewhere on my site?

    The short answer is YES.

    It doesn't have to be elaborate pages-long legalese.

    It just has to spell out what data you collect, how you use it, how you protect it and who has access to it (and under which conditions)

    It could be something as simple as:

    [Start sample]

    We collect email addresses for the purpose of delivering the content promised on the site. This may include information about offers made by outside companies, but those companies do not have access to your information.

    Should you click through on a link provided by us, that site will be governed by their own Privacy Policy.

    We collect no other personally-identifiable information. Aggregated information, such as that contained in our server logs, is used for the improvement and administration of this site.

    We use a third-party service (Name) to handle our email data, as it provides another level of security for your information.

    If our company (or its assets, including our email database) are sold or acquired by another party, your email address will be delivered as part of that transfer. At that point, we no longer retain access to your personal information.

    We also comply with legitimate requests from government and law enforcement agencies.

      Thats a good model John, and i'm not sure but when people sign up for an
      email list how many of them actually read a privacy policy all the way through?
      If at all, although i would definiatly recommend having one. Just to be on the
      safe side.

        The truth is, most people won't actually read it at all, any more than they read Terms of Service, End User License Agreements and most of the other contracts they accept.

        The privacy policy is more for the people who do read such things - like the Google review team if you ever decide to use Adwords. A short, plain-English statement is going to be good enough for most IM types.

        For most of the general population, though, just the fact that it's there is enough.

        If you're a bank, insurance company, brokerage firm, etc., though, all bets are off. You definitely want the lawyered-up version that covers your entire kiester...
