Selling Text Links--How Much Should I Charge?

I have been approached by several website owners who are looking to buy text based advertising on several of my sites. How does one price something like this? I have no idea how to begin the negotiation in this area. Any suggestions? Any thoughts?

    I've responded to those emails and they are going to offer something in the neighborhood of $50 per year. Forget it.

    If you want to sell text links it's best to build high-PR websites (4+) and then sell them through text link brokers for about $50 per month each. Don't do this with an Adsense account website. In fact I would make them on a separate host from your adsense accounts and build them specifically for PR and text link selling. (You can throw a few affiliate links on them of course.)

    Don't worry about traffic on those sites as it's all about PR. Don't put all your eggs in this basket however as this game will end at some point because it's just that - a game where you are not producing any real value. At some point PR will stop being pumped up just from having links from PR.

    You can look at it two ways. You can charge a premium, but then have to probably deliver performance to exceed that cost. Conversely, you can charge a really low monthly fee, and not really have any expectation of performance. I tend to keep the pricing low and lock them in for longer periods of time, because it's cash flow I can depend on. But I'm not an expert at it, a friend of my brokers all my text link ads for me and we split it.

    Of course, the ideal ad customer is the vain business owner who doesn't care about results. They will pay whatever you ask, forever. Just to make themselves feel good.
