Do we have to change the permissions for The .htaccess file
in cpanel to properly change permalinks in wordpress.

    Just change settings in WP and everything should change.

    It depends, I know that is not the answer you were looking for but it is accurate, for example I have four different web servers, on one of them I have to modify the .htaccess permissions in order to change it, so it was dependent on that particular web host.

    It seems like I remember using a plugin one time that gave an error message if this was a problem, but I forget which plugin it was, usually there is a plugin for that, as the app store saying goes, so it is for wordpress plugins, there is usually a plugin that will do just about anything you need done on a wordpress website.

    Yeah, it depends, but it usually puts up a big message on the screen that tells you that you have to change the permissions when it is necessary. Or at least it used to.

    Ya you are right.

    Been with hostgator for so long I forgot that I used to have to change permissions too. But I do remember a message that came up that told me I had to when I tried to save.

      I assume you are changing permalinks to benefit your site's SEO. Choose Custom and then enter /%postname% if you are using keywords for titles.

        I'm going to use keywords to rank for them along with different
        categories would this permalink be best /%category%/%postname%/
