What's the proper way to check where your site is ranked on Google?

When I check to see where my site is ranked for a specific keyword in quotes it comes up #70 in both Scroogle and Google. But without quotes, I can't find it.

What is the proper way to check to see where my site ranks for that specific keyword?

Also, Market Samurai had me at #80 for that keyword. What tool should I rely on to get the best answer?

    Well the vast majority of users will be searching without quotes - so it's your ranking for that query that matters.

    There is a simple (free) rank checking tool in my sig that you can try out to compare.

    Different rank checkers give different results for a multitude of reasons. Google serves different results based on factors like history, location, time of day etc...

    So there is always the chance that rankings will fluctuate. But some tools can be reasonably accurate as a guide.

    You have to think about your customers and what they use.

    Finding it at number 20 in quotes is meaningless. It's a good way to get a feel for how much your competitors have really laser focused their efforts on a phrase but your customers won't use it so you won't get them unless you show for normal unquoted search terms.

    I use Web Position Pro to do all my ranking stats and there are lots of other tools that will tell you where you rank - but it's only meaningful if it's how your customers search.
