Whats better: Go live and optimize or the other way round?

Hi there,

in your opinion, what is better:

Getting a (pre-optimized) site live and indexed first, and THEN start optimizing the last bit out of it, or instead invest more time making it as "perfect" as possible and THEN have it live & indexed?
#live #optimize #round

I say optimize on the fly. How are you supposed to know anything with a brand new site with no baseline. At the beginning its just a big guess.

Sure, you can do research and try to make the best decisions possible but its still a guess until its performance is proven.

The way I like to do it is to test with PPC because its faster. It does cost $$$, but better than waiting around for 6 months.

One downside to optimizing while live (this is something I have run into) is that Google's crawlers might not pick up your changes for weeks, so your optimizations will be useless for some waiting period.

Do basic optimization first, then go live. You can then start adding additional content. Remember each page (including blog posts) get their own "ranking power". You will be optimizing each page, each article, each post, which in the end increases the total ranking power of the entire site and home page.

As far as "might not pick up your changes for weeks", that is not a Google problem, that is not knocking on their door. When you post new content make sure you leave new trails to the new content including Digg, StumbleUpon, Delicious, Ping your RSS feed submissions, Tweet about it, have it hit your Facebook Fan page, etc... When Google hears you loudly announcing your new content, they will come to the party pretty quickly.

I've often wondered the same thing about going live first and doing SEO later. Maybe Google remembers your original, unoptimized site for a considerable length of time, continuing to hold it against you even after you have performed SEO. Or maybe Google forgives you quickly, in which case what remains is the benefit of your site having been indexed sooner. I would be interested in a conclusive answer on this.

My new internet buddy Paul said this to me today (i'm paraphrasing)

It's better to have a live site that's crap than a great site that's collecting dust offline

Tweak and split test as you go. There's no use sitting on something if it can make you money.

Any page that is "not yet live" is a a page that is "not yet making money."

Get it out there now. You will be tweaking it until the end of time, because it will never be perfect.

Optimizing doesn't take all that long initially...

Thesis Theme has site options that you can upload to a new site...

Ritual Genesis creates best practice pages, changes permalink structure, and creates new home page based on Site Title (keyword)...

SEOPressor (Daniel Tan) Gets your new home page optimized fast...

By the time your sitemap is built (plugin), you simply announce your new site (home page) with a short, but focused post...

Grab the feed and run it through FeedBurner, then submit it to the directories (software)...

Ping your new site (backlink booster), then take it to OnlyWire and PingFM...

My sites are typically indexed in 24 hours!

Optimize the index page and put the site up now.

You can do the other work later on and then you post or write articles or do any number of things to get your site re-spidered and updated.

Your site will never be perfect, but right now if it is on your hard drive and not online you are wasting the time it could be out there getting you noticed.

Getting your site up and running as soon as possible is always the best option.

It will give Google time to find and index your site and your site will start aging.

Set up a good homepage and build the site on the fly.

Chances are it will be a few weeks before traffic starts trickling in, so you will have time to add more value to the site.

A good marketer will always be testing and tweaking things - no page is ever perfect. Get the page online and let the testing begin. You won't know what to test or change until you have some decent data to go from.
