What is Your Favorite Color and Why(?)

I know this question is akin to what a child in grade school would be asked. When doing IM, however, I can't help but constantly think and re-evaluate the significance of the fundamental colors I use in various projects. As a poster had mentioned in a different thread, I think it's quite interesting that websites like Facebook, MySpace, PayPal, and a whole host of others have adopted a "blue" color.

Could facilitating a great sense of trust be as simple as picking a certain color?

What colors are your favorite? Which do you like to use the most in IM? Do you feel that others are more inclined to trust you and see you as a thought leader because of the colors you use?

Blue does seem to have taken over a lot. It seems to be a soft trusting color. Red to me has a strong sense on power and strength. I think from site to site the color should be different depending on the market. I would like to see soft greens and blues on a gardening site but I would not think they would appeal as much on a dating site

I tend to use blues and greens for health related niches because, to me, they resonate with those topics.

Having said that, I used dark red and black for my recent Anxiety site as it symbolised for me the inner turmoil a lot of people go through when suffering from this disorder.

I think colour choice is very important and we all tend to react similarly to certain colours - hence hospitals using soft blues and pinks for their calming effect.

I like and use RGB (180,0,90). I try to combine the power effect with the comforting one.

My favorite color is pink, maybe because Im a girl and girls has this certain natural love for pink. But I wouldn't use it for marketing unless Im going to use the love niche in my business. In marketing I still go for red. It looks more professional and seems to be the color for business.

My favourite colour is purple, but it's not one I can really use on my blogs I have been using Matt Carter's Wordpress theme which has a choice of red, blue or grey, and green I think. I use the gray for an IM related blog and red for a couple of others. I would maybe use the green if I had a health blog or a gardening type blog. I guess it all depends on the niche.

I like using that maroony looking color for some reason. I've never really sat down and tested this although I have given it passing thought.

I think it's a very important topic though and one which should ignite good discussion. The theory of soft blues airing a feeling of trust is significant.

What about some of the most successful sales pages having NO color, just a simple white template?

It's a very interesting topic which I'm keeping a keen eye on, thanks for posting

Colour is hugely important when you design a website. I have often clicked away from a page because of the awful colour scheme, without even bothering to read the copy.

(A black background with white lettering is a particular pet hate of mine!)

I too really like blues and greens online, they help to make a webpage readable and easy on the eye, but red, as here in the Warrior Forum, gives a good feeling of authority and strength.

Blue, especially the deep blues, signify an authority figure. That's why police in many cities wear blue uniforms and in some military divisions. Supposedly, it immediately sends a message to would-be criminals that they need to pay attention.

Can't recall where I read that, but it also said that if you want people to pay attention to you, then blue is the way to go. Sports teams that adopt this color are supposed to have the edge because of their blue uniforms sending a psychological message to their opponents.

Red is very popular in advertising because it does represent excitement and pleasure. It stirs up the emotions, which is something you probably want to do when you're trying to sell products.

Orange, on the other hand, apparently is a turn-off for many people. I ran a survey once on one of my sites and I was shocked that so many people really did not like the orange - and were quite emphatic about it.

On a travel site, however, I did not do a test because it was more of an educational site. I rather liked the orange that I chose for my logo and accent colors because it was more indicative of the sun and brightness as you would find in travel brochures. I like to think people liked it in that context.

From that, I would tend to think that it depends on your target audience and the purpose of your site. Children, for example, would certainly prefer brighter colors (yellows, oranges, light blues, etc.) because they are playful.

A corporate site on the other hand would probably do well with the darker blues. I've seen many such sites - as well as others that just want that 'professional' and 'authoritative' look.

Me, I tend to go with red simply because I know it's proven to work and is probably more widely accepted. My business site is black and white (not white text on black, BTW). Although, my mental health site is a grass green which fits the theme. Green is known to create a relaxed state, and I want my visitors to feel calm, not agitated.

    Sylvia

P.S.: My personal favorite colors are yellow (like the smilie) which I've liked since I was a child, and baby blue because it goes with my eyes.

It's a pretty interesting read on color psychology.
Yes it is. Too bad they don't apply the basics to their own website, LOL
(i.e. don't use white font on dark bg for screen...)

There are a lot of interesting writings about the colour psychology, however if you are into international marketing - treat those "theories" with the proverbial grain of salt.

When I studied (and later taught) cross-cultural communication I had to discover that most of these rules are not "hard-wired" in our brain/genes but they are culturally learnt associations. Which means, one colour can have a completely different connotation/association in another culture than in your own

I use a lot of blues, greens and browns which are saturated so they appeara to be grayed down a little. I use a grayed down orange for accents.

I do a lot of seasonal websites and then I use the colors of those seasons at least those colors that are prototypically American and I try to stay away from the original web-safe colors.

Different people like diffrent colours. I think that colours have their own language, as black shows sorrow but red shows power, strength, confidence. likewise pink goes for softness and white stands for purity.

That's exactly the type of false generalization (in stronger terms: ethnocentric view) I was warning against a few posts above.

Imagine: there are cultures where the colour of mourning is white!

I don't think I have a favor color in IM, but I stay away of yellow. It is said that yellow is "annoying" to the eyes...not sure how true it is, but when I think about it, I can believe it.

My favorite color in general is red, it's bold and attractive. Plus its one of the few things me and my father have in common :-)

The colour of your website solely depends on your target audience.

Firstly you need to find out what gender they are (they can be both!), how old they are and are they happy / sad.

    Why?

Gender is important. Blokes wont like pink website, Women may not like Dark - Grey / Green / Blacks / Reds "tech" colours like you'd find on computer and gaming forums etc. I think blues are the best colours for targetting both sexes although sometimes can be portrayed as depressing, you might actually want your visitors to have that sort of sad feeling on your website for them to buy something - or you might want bright colours, reds and yellows etc to make them think if they buy your product it will make them happy again.

Colour pyschology is very interesting, although you need a good website with great content before considering the website design in too much detail. Companies pay millions for graphic, logo, website consultants just to increase conversions and brand recognition etc by a little bit. I think it was Shell that forked over millions to a consultancy only for them to come back and say that it was best for them to keep their logo the same.

Exactly, it is also very important to check the culture(s) of your target audience when trying to get across subconscious feelings and emotions, although in general - colour psychology is universal throughout the human race.
