Social bookmarking question

Greetings all-

Onlywire has been working very well for me in terms of being able to bookmark quickly.

Do you find value in social bookmarking those pages that are backlinks to your site.. eg, ezine articles, squidoo pages, etc. - so far I have not been social bookmarking those pages.

    I have only been social bookmarking my web 2.0 properties and pre-sell pages, and have found it to work for affiliate marketing. I was told to do this by a friend who has been pretty successful with IM. I will let you know how it goes for me.

    This is something I completely avoid.

    I want to build my own sites, not other people's, even if I have my own backlinks on the pages to which I'd be sending traffic and making links.

    With EZA articles, for instance, there can definitely be a short-term traffic advantage to building backlinks to them, but it's the classic case of "the descending ceiling" to do so, and is really short-sighted: it can produce some fast traffic and fast commissions, but every inch you raise yourself up in that way silently lowers the ceiling by three inches and limits the height you can eventually reach. The more you do it, the more certain it becomes that in the long run, you're shooting yourself in the foot and will end up with an article directory permanently outranking your own site for your own keywords.

    Many people do this, because of the potential for a small, fast benefit from it, don't quite appreciate the long-term damage, and end up consigning themselves, almost by force, to a "rinse and repeat" model of article marketing instead of a "building a business" model. At first, there may be a small gain, but in the long run there's a big loss in terms of opportunity-cost. For many people, that's ultimately quite likely to be the difference between making a living and not making a living.

    It's easy to imagine that you're "getting traffic from article directories" when in fact you're actually "sending traffic to article directories" rather than building up your own properties.

    If you're building backlinks in places that may not even get indexed (why?) then pinging them can be worthwhile, but this is, of course, a different question and serves a different purpose.

      Thanks Alexa-- I was wondering if the squidoo pages etc we make needed any help being indexed for the backlink to count etc. - your info is very helpful.

        I've also only been social bookmarking the front page of my sites (if they are niche sites for a specific thing) - have you found any value in social marking other pages within your site? Any risk of seen as spamming? Thanks again

          My general policy over this is that I always start off by backlinking to the home page, when the site's new; and then after that, wherever I can do two links (e.g. in an EZA article - ok, not "social bookmarking" but the backlinking argument is a related one), I often do one to the home page and one to "some other page". So, as the thing grows, the home page gets 50% of the backlinks and the other pages each get a smaller number, in inverse proportion to their overall quantity.

          I'm simplifying, of course, because you might have one or two other pages which you particularly want to rank well, and others (such as, in my case, some of the copies of my articles which I've put on my own site and had indexed there first, prior to EZA submission, because those pages are there for search engines as much as for people) about which you're not nearly so bothered.

          I do social bookmark some of my internal pages, not all of them on every site, but usually a fair number of them.

          I viewed this as a way to build links in a broad way for my site. Although it would be hard to separate out the impact that each individual backlinking strategy has on my site, I use this on almost every one of my sites and I think it is a successful strategy.

          I also think becasue of the way I do it, it is alos an efficient use of my time and resources.

    Ping FM is good too...

    You can auto-generate a blogger blog with your Ping FM account, which creates another feed that you can submit to directories for links back to your links...

    And yes...

    Bookmark your backlinks, but randomly throw in some unrelated content as well...

    Backlink Booster (Sean Donahue) is a great tool for automation... and of course, rss submitter.

    I dont think backlinking pages that have your backlink will help much. Atmost, you may get few visitors who click on those links.
