Separate sites for similar niche?

hi all

quick question to the successful affiliates out there. i have a site reviewing guitar packages (in my sig). i want to open another one selling guitar straps - however i am unsure if i should get a domain geared toward guitar straps, SEO the hell out of it and treat it as a separate site OR add a section on my current site called "accessories" or something and put the straps in there.

plus and minus points for both - what are your thoughts?

thanks

The upside is you would be adding more content to an established site, and not having to repeat the spade work you did before. The downside is your potentially loosing sales on people who are looking for guitar straps specifically.

In the end I would recommend a separate site if you have enough time, and resources. People that are searching for such a specific item, tend to be more willing to spend their money.

Depends on what you want to do with the site.

If you want to start building the Guitar site into an authority site, thern add the Guitar Straps on the existing site.

You could then go on to add Guitar strings, Guitar Tuners, guitar stands, Guitar cases ..... and so on.

If this is not your aim, then build a seperate Guitar Straps site, to keep it targeted to Guitar strap seekers

woo! {shudder} white text on a black background! Seems to me we just discussed this in another thread on what is your favorite color and why.

Regardless, since your site is offering guitar 'packages' which seem to include all items that a guitarist would need: amp, carrying case, guitar, strings, straps, etc. it makes perfect sense to set aside a category for guitar straps alone.

If someone is looking at your packages and wants only one item, you will have it there for them. You could include categories for several of the items that come in those packages: amplifiers, carrying cases, etc.and become an official guitar store of sorts. It would give you great credibility in Google and if you can provide your visitors with a one-stop shopping benefit, you'll become more popular and have a higher sales profit potential.

thats exactly my dilemma, thanks for your response. i think i'm going to wait out a bit while my current sites take flight and then jump into another niche.

    thanks

thanks guys, i dont want to step too far outside of my niche though. i'm wondering where the lines are - if i was to put straps up, where would it stop? next thing i'd have strings, plectrums... then it wouldnt be the electric guitar package niche.

But your electric guitar package is simply a combination of many single items.

I would go through the packages and select some of the most obvious items people might want to buy separately, like straps. No need to cover every single guitar-related product and not even every single item in your package. Just the main ones.

Are you a guitarist? If so, you should have an idea what people need most frequently. If you aren't, find some people who are and ask them. Better yet, drop into your local guitar shop and ask what are the most popular selling items.

Do some real research and build your site based on that.

thats true but the packages are a group of products put especially together for a beginner guitarist, forming a single product in it's own right.

i do play guitar. i recognise that many guitarists want to try before they buy, where newbies arent so fussed, so the guitar packages are an easier sell. if i start adding all kinds of products up there it strays from the niche, and niche marketing is where (i'm told) it's at.

Sounds like you're trying to convince yourself that creating a new site is a better idea.

In the end, it comes down to what you can do. You did state that you don't have time to do both sites.

          Consider this.

What if a beginner guitar player buys one of your packages. He decides he'd rather have a different guitar strap. Or maybe he already has a guitar, got it as a gift maybe, but he needs more so he can learn. Then, he can buy one of your kits, or whatever item he thinks he needs.

I really don't see that having your guitar packages as your main focus, and adding individual accessories separately is that much of a stretch. Think ahead. If these buyers use your package and need replacement supplies, they could wander around the internet looking elsewhere, or you can steer them right back to your site.

It's all in how you prioritize your site.

Here's how I'd set it up:

Main Category: Guitar Packages for Beginners (This will be highlighted on your main page)
Sub-Category: Accessories (Create a separate part of your site for these)
Sub-sub categories: guitar straps, guitar strings.... etc.

I just wrote about this very thing in my upcoming Marketing Niche Kit. Think ahead to what your customers will want in the future as they grow and progress. Your customers will learn and down the road, they will be looking for more related products so they can keep playing. All you have to do is be there when they're ready.

I have one site where I list all of my products, and then a separate site for each individual product. It seems to work well.

To me, I'd see if I could get an exact match domain for the guitar strap keyword you're looking at. If that's available, I'd get it and put up a new site.

Like others have said, if you're trying to a guitar authority site, then add it to this one. If you're not, and it doesn't sound like you are, start a new one.
