Is SEO really needed?

Is SEO really needed for Content Mangement System based websites? Such as websites created in Wordpress, Joomla, Squarespace...etc? I know Squarespace already does it for you, but is there anything else in SEO that could be done to improve it?

Discuss.

I think you allways got to do some SEO on any thing like if you are targeting a certain keyword or niche you have to have that keyword in title and content before you can get ranked for it,

Maybe you can get ranked for other terms by chance but that is a shot in the dark and those may or may not be of any value if you are wanting to earn any money from it.

  • if you have good content then seo matters less

if you have unread content then you better try every other trick (seo) to get it to rank

    those systems cover the basics

writing good content and spending the proper time promoting it is the best seo you can do

Yes it is very much worth it.

I did a test about 9 months back. I uploaded wordpress to 2 different domains. I wanted to do a test where one site had all of the proper seo and the other site just had a keyword rich article. Both websites only got one article to start off with.

Site 1 with the SEO plugin - All in one SEO got indexed on the 3rd or 4th page.
Site 2 with no SEO work done to it got indexed right under position number 1000, I can't remember exactly but it was close to 1,000.

I then pointed some backlinks at both websites. Just did a simple scrapebox blast. Each website ended up with about the same amount of backlinks, yet site #1 moved up in the rankings and site 2 did not move, and actually still has not moved at all.

That is just my experience. I hope it helps you out.

It's always good to follow basic SEO principles. Whether its "worth it" or not really depends on where your customer is coming from.

If you rely on organic search for traffic then SEO is very important. If you're using paid traffic sources such as Adwords or offline space ads for traffic generation then SEO isn't as important.

So, to answer your question.... it depends.

I guess it depends on your definition of "needed".

Yes, you'll have sitewide SEO through some basic plugin setup on WordPress.

But you still need to set your own meta title, keywords and description for each individual article if you really want to get the best possible results.

So if by "needed" you mean will you get traffic without extra steps, then yeah you will.

But you won't get as much traffic as you would if you do go the extra mile and optimize article by article.

My experience is that with Web 2.0 sites limited knowledge will get you by in reaching the front page of Google. If your title is keyword rich certain sites like: Hubpages, Squidoo, WordPress can show up within hours of posting. I find the knowledge of SEO is most needed when trying to rank actual websites. Thanks, ncdf001
