Pinging Tips

I was wondering i have some pingbacks on my new blog in the comments section...i.e "pingback on page 1" for example and it has a link to my own site, should I approve those? I don't know much about pinging....

Also I just added a big list of rss feeds to my wordpress update section in writing. So when I have a new post it will updated those on the list, is there such a thing as too much pinging in the eyes of google?

  • 1. Pinging = a link in a blogpost pointing to another blog post. It can come from your own blog (if in one post you linked to another) or from other bloggers.

    1a. A slightly different type of feedback is TrackBack: your posts is NOt mentioned in another blogpost but the link toward your post is placed in the TB field by another blogger.

    (and there is TB spam - too often, unfortunately)

    2. You don't need a huge list a update services. That's a misconception! YES, you can ping too much. Not for google but for those services - they will see you as a spammer.
    The fact is that 2-3-4 services are enough: they will re-ping ALL the other services. So, no need for more...

    When it comes to blogs, the terminology is as follows:

    Pinging = notify a server (search engine, blog directory...) about your blog, usually when it's been updated

    Pingback = notify another blog that you've linked to it without the other blog posting a link back to your blog post

    Trackback = notify another blog that you've linked to it and getting a link back to your own blog post

    But you knew that, didn't you?
