Got an Internship as an IM - Need a few steps to guide me along the way

Hello warriors!

I've been lurking for some time trying to learn the ropes of IM. After browsing a few threads I noticed you guys really know your stuff. Like many others I feel this is a great place to seek advice.

I will start by telling you a bit about myself. I am a university graduate with a B.Comm streaming in Marketing Management. I have recently obtained an internship where I will be in charge of the social media / e-marketing side of the business in North America. The B2B company (service provider) mainly sells webinars to large companies.

I have no existing experience in this field other than what I've learned in school. I hope to use this job as a stepping stone for bigger opportunities.

I can pretty much do the basics such as : setting up a Facebook page/group, opening a Twitter account, create a presence on LinkedIn, and showcase the service on a YouTube channel. But I would like to know more advanced techniques I can use to create awareness for this company. Are there any good tools for those social media sites I've listed?

My main concern is that on the Job Description/Responsibilities they require someone who is able to "drive attendance and registration" to these webinars. I feel because this is a B2B venture, social media marketing wont be as effective.

I like to consider myself fairly tech-savvy. I am a quick learner when it comes to using programs or applications.

I would like to thank everyone in advanced for taking the time to read my thread and helping me, and maybe one day I will return the favor by contributing something of value to these forums.

- Let me know if you guys need any questions answered

When you say "The B2B company (service provider) mainly sells webinars to large companies", do you mean they sell webinars (like training or contiuning education) for the client company's internal use? Or webinars that the client companies will use to promote/further their own business?

Hi John, thanks for the quick reply. To answer your question its - Webinars that the client companies will use to promote/further their own business.

        Okay, then...

The first thing to realize is that, at many companies, you'll have two 'customers' - someone in the Marketing department, and someone higher up the food chain with the authority to pull the trigger.

Each of those customers has two basic needs that you must satisfy. Will this help the company achieve its objective? And will this make ME look good for recommending it? There's a flip side to the second question - what's the worst thing that can happen to me if this doesn't work?

Your job is to make the answers to those questions yes, yes and 'not much'.

One of the best ways you can do that is to show previous successes, especially case studies of companies similar to the ones you approach.

One of the smartest guys I'm aware of in the B2B field is Perry Marshall. You might want to spend some time on his site at perrymarshall.com...

Does this include a service where you guys setup the webinar for them?
        or
A "do it yourself but we'll also give you the whole training on how to" type?
