I'm seeing this more and more on the net.. surprisingly now more than ever.

You make social connections, or become a part of some Facebook group and there are people that don't say

Hi, I'm so and so, this is what I do, very nice to meet you.

They go

MY PRODUCT DOWN YOUR THROAT.

Do people realize how much this turns people off?

Humans like humans, not machines! Something I had to learn for myself initially, but has helped me tremendously since!

Because IM has a lot to do with PSYCHOLOGY, this is important! The new web 2.0 is an emotion conscious, behavior and psychology conscious animal! Thanks for reading.

too true. this is why i try to inject personality into my posts on affiliate sites - one even has my picture on it and some introductory text. i write with my opinions, which are honest and not always good, and i think people will find this more believable than generic sales copy.

I would go as far as saying most of those are probably on some comment bot - the person posting them hasn't even bothered to read your blog and have picked the most generic comment they can in the slight hope it might get approved - all that does it make me mark them as spam - they waste their time and ours

        • Regarding comments, I find that using a name like:

          "Chris 'The Traffic Blogger"

in my case works well enough for attracting clicks that I don't need to include an additional link in the body of the comment.

btw, How is traffic on I-40 through Oklahoma today?

It works as long as it is in the right context, but if you are jumping into Facebook Pages and Groups which are irrelevant to your "nickname", then it will not be understood and may appear "spammy".

Actually, I needed the info on I-70 through Kansas City, I have a long way to go before I drop down to I-40.

            Take care,

Thing is, being a human being takes hard work and huge amounts of time, so people look for short cuts. But like you, I am always promoting the human interaction as the best business plan. It's hard work but it works, and the business you bring in is real business with real people behind it who have real loyalty. The mom and pop mentality is as true today as it ever was.

Most marketers just do not understand that mass marketing has no place in social media.

Exactly. Just blasting people with ads is not going to be effective. There has to be a reason that the person would listen to you. And then trust your opinion on why "such and such" product is a good fit for them.

When you choose to follow those profiles, you know in advance what you are getting into.

Most of the people we know in these forums and on the Internet who market something will completely ignore the relationship aspect and jump directly to mass marketing.

The way most smaller companies do it is completely backwards and ineffective.

Most smaller marketers are not marketing products to people who will visit their store in person to buy one of thousands of available products.

Instead, they are attempting to market a product the prospect isn't even aware of or has shown no interest.

Penis Enlargement is an easy example. I even get boob enlargement spam, and I don't have boobs of my own.

But I even get emails and social media contacts telling me to buy an accessory for my XBox 360, and no such video consoles exist in my household.

Those following Kroger are doing so with the expectation of getting grocery store coupons.

Those following Bill Platt have no such expectation, and they would be offended if I sent them mass marketing messages.

Yet, those who follow Bill Platt are happy to hear directly from Bill Platt if I have something personal to share with them one-on-one that could help my business and theirs.

I do realize this is shades of gray, but they are important shades of gray to consider.

True to a degree since it's built in part offline via store visits and other mass marketing methods. Of course, this marketing is sometimes more subtle than others (see the Mad Men Don Draper clip I linked to).

I don't think this is so much relationship building but that the subscriber knows that the company will be promoting their products and services and they want those things. The relationship is more implicit than explicit.

On the flip side, some individuals, particularly in IM, come across like a new MLM member trying to get their friends and family to join their 'business'. That isn't what the friends signed up for and will start leaving in droves.

I think the "no place" was probably referring to when you go into a page related to a Radio show you like and spam it with "Hey, i'm selling purple ceramic frogs! Buy now!" There is NO PLACE for that.

Dollar General is doing it right, building trust with their followers and then they can promote offers to garner more sales. Most people do it wrong.

Yes, but that's not mass marketing. Mass marketing does have a social aspect, which is what I was getting to with the link to P.T. Barnum's book on the topic. It's not anything new and savvy marketers have known this for well over a century. It's just the tactics have changed with the times but not the basic strategy.

There are parts of internet marketing that can be done with machines, software, and hardware, but the long term value is in building a relationship.

It is possible to use campaigns like that as examples of how not to conduct yourself online it is hard to see some value in them, unless you are selling the ads.

I believe that the internet was always about relationships and communication, real communication back and forth, not just telling people things and that this idea is distilled in the social web 2.0 type of site.

    Ryan,
That's precisely why I'm working on building up a fan page on Facebook where those types of offers feel less intrusive to folks that have opted to like the page. In some sense I almost feel as if they want to see an occassional offer mixed in with quality postings.

I know this would work much better then throwing in an offer on my regular Facebook page sandwiched between my UFC postings, what movie I watched today and what I did with my kids.

    Respectfully,

I've found that people's eyes glaze over when you talk about "building relationships", and this is why so many ignore the good advice they read.

So just for the people who have skipped all the useful posts because they saw a cliche...

Building relationships with people simply means talking to them. Talk about television, work, what is going on in their lives, occasionally about what you are doing. Well you get the idea. You just have to treat them as people, instead of idiots with credit cards, which is a common newbie failing.

I tried to set up a membership site about 4 months ago, it's gone now as I managed to pick a trademark name purely by mistake. Anyway, when I mentioned how I was marketing it, a few Facebook friends paid to join up so that it looked like I had more members. They didn't see themselves as customers but friends, and joined the membership site - just to make it easier for me to sell to customers!

So that is the meaning of the cliche, and now you know LOL

I am not too sure I agree with this.

Let me give you an example. You go to facebook as an example and there are lots of ads. ads are intrusive.but ads work.

Same as television, bus stops, bulletin boards, websites etc...
Ads are what generates revenue which allows for the businesses of the world to function.
Now I understand your reasoning and how some can take it to the extreme. But there are businesses on FB they don't post -hey I went to the fridge pulled out a bottle of pop and made a nice turkey and swiss sandwich. They post product updates, new releases and they use it to generate a buzz and they promote FB on their website by asking people to hit the like button or leave a comment etc...

Psychology is not limited to a social network obviously. A ton of email marketers are extremely intrusive, even though in list building it is supposed to be the same way you build a relationship with your list. Sales is pyschology it is getting into your prospect's mind, hitting on things that they deal with and causing an emotional connection with them.Convincing them your product or service is the answer to the problem they are dealing with.(I am still working on that part)

Business is not a friendship. I have friends and I have clients.
To be clear I know what you are saying I am just offering a different perspective. I approach my business as a business and in business professionalism and character is imperative, but, I would not share with my clients what I would with my friends and unless they asked me I would not try to sell to my friends. They wouldn't remain that way very long if I did.:p

There is a good way, and a bad way. Those who use the bad way can be spotted from miles away, and they are a turn-off. I had to kick more than a few 'friends' from my FB list because of such a behaviour. After a few years, I learnt never add Business asscociates in my list, only friends that I know in real life.

Based on my experience there are two systems in play. The seller has a system and the buyer has one. In the offline line world the buyers lie. If you understand their mind when they are in front of a salesperson, it’s all over the place.

They lie because they believe salespeople lie and talk too much. People lie because that is the only defense they have against salespeople. Now the real deal is this. Both want to be in control. The marketer’s behavior is based on what he or she was taught.

So, they talk or write all the reasons why the prospects should buy the product. But the prospect or surfers have their own reasons for buying. When the marketer does not know what’s going on inside the buyers head, then you have conflict. Result, NO Sale!

You can’t persuade happy people. It’s easier to persuade people who are in pain. No matter how good you might think you are at selling, you can sell something to someone if they don’t want it.

Someone needs to say this so it might as well be me. In the twenty-first century people don’t buy Features and Benefits. They buy relief from their pain.

They lie because they believe salespeople lie and talk too much. People lie because that is the only defense they have against salespeople. Now the real deal is this. Both want to be in control. The marketer's behavior is based on what he or she was taught.

So, they talk or write all the reasons why the prospects should buy the product. But the prospect or surfers have their own reasons for buying. When the marketer does not know what's going on inside the buyers head, then you have conflict. Result, NO Sale!

You can't persuade happy people. It's easier to persuade people who are in pain. No matter how good you might think you are at selling, you can sell something to someone if they don't want it.

Someone needs to say this so it might as well be me. In the twenty-first century people don't buy Features and Benefits. They buy relief from their pain.

Social marketing is very challenging when you don't have an established brand. If you are a affiliate marketer just spamming your way across facebook or twitter you will get banned and blocked very fast.

Target your responses to actual discussions with people and interact.

Yep, twitter is even worse. Spam tweets a 1/2 second at a time. Then wonder why no one purchases.
