If I wrote an article for someone and they refuse to pay, yet they use my article, is there anything I can do?

When I first read this I thought you meant sites like articlesbase or something were copying your material. If that were the case you could simply include links to your site within the article and not have to worry about it.

If someone is stealing your content then contact their host provider (do a whois on google to find them)

Yes, there is - but it's really terribly time-consuming, difficult and probably not worth it. It usually won't get you the money, anyway, only (probably, eventually) the disappearance of the article from the offending site(s).

The important thing is to collect payment in advance in future.

People ordering products and services online are used to paying in advance.

There really is nothing you can do about this. I am a writer and it happened to me a while back. Now I require at least 50% of the fee up front before I ever start writing. Also, if someone doesn't pay me the second half of what I am owed I will never accept work from them again.

Either ask for payment upfront or a 50% retainer. Anyone that is serious about their business will have no problem accepting those conditions.

On the flip side make sure you provide the actual articles because I've seen numerous instances where payment was rendered upfront and the articles never delivered.

    Respectfully,

And that would be equally lame. The writer taking the money and running and the business using an article that they refused to pay for = douchebaggery.

Hey, you got some great tips here.
Also, if they have an area where they posted it, perhaps in a blog, you could always leave a comment. It might get their attention.

Also - if the article was never paid for, then it is still yours. Use it yourself if you have a blog or site in that niche.

I totally agree. You may try to persuade the client to pay you for it or remove the article but it will take a lot of your time. Most of the time, you can't do anything once they totally ignore your payment demands.

You can still use it as it's still yours.

  • If its only one article I'd just let it go. If that's how they operate and run their business then they'll be in trouble down the road for something.

      Hi Mary Jane,

There probably isn’t much you can do unless you have hard evidence that the person breached your contract.

I’d advise you in the future to either pick your clients more wisely or use an escrow service to protect yourself.

One alternative is singing up for a freelance website and sign up for jobs through the website.

That way if there are any problems, then you can easily contact customer support to solve the issues.

You should have accepted first the payment, and after that you should have send them the article. There are ppr chances to get your article or money back.

Start by sending a formal request to the site owner telling them to remove the article.

If that does not work, you can file a complaint with the hosting provider they are using. The hosting provider will send a notification and the site owner will likely take the content down before having the hosting provider ban the site altogether.

If that doesn't work, you can file a complaint with Google.
