Any Valentine's Day Marketing Tips for the Noobs?

Hi everyone,

I know is still a month to the actual date but we have to start marketing for Valentine's day starting feb 1st (if i'm not terribly wrong). So before I start strategizing for my business I wanted to know if there were any expert tips, hooks, warnings, etc. you wanted to share with the newbies?

We know the basics of putting up promotional affiliate links and banners etc. I would (as i'm sure a few others would too) really appreciate it if anyone would give sort of a breakdown on what to do and more importantly, what not to do.

Cheers,
Sana

Feb 1st? No no no. You need to start RIGHT NOW.

I'm doing some work in the dating niche, targeting people that feel like they are going to be alone on VDAY, so that's one idea.

Amazon is also a GOLDMINE when it comes to valentines day. you could easily set up a site that sells chocolates, cards, lingerie, whatever.

Valentine's day is EASIER than shooting fish in a barrel.

It's all about keywords. In the case of valentine's day, you'll want to rank for searches with terms like "where can i get" and "where can I buy" and things like "valentine's gift ideas"

There are literally millions of keywords you can pick to drive traffic.

That "Lazy" label you have tagged on is pretty deceptive
Okay so i'm in the health niche I can start today just need to doctor my a-store a little. Thanks!

Start working on some cards and banners too. I can send that out to my (tiny) list of subscribers and update other affiliate links with proper promotional stuff.

My target demographic is women... is that good or do men literally do all the shopping?

it's good that you're targeting women, actually. It's a much less competitive demographic when it comes to vday

The others have a valid point about how men do the majority of the shopping for Valentine's day. So I'd suggest just keeping your options open, and selecting your target market based on the profitability factor - this is especially important since Valentine's day gifts are pretty much all going to be physical products.

It's not good, but not because men do all the shopping. It's way too broad, especially if you want to start now for an event that's only a month away.

You have to niche it down.

        Young women? Middle-aged? Senior?

Single? Married? Divorced? In a committed relationship?

        Straight or gay?

Which part of the economic spectrum?

Asking if you should target men or women is like asking if you should fish in the Atlantic or the Pacific. Both are way too big to give a sensible answer...

Thanks John, my target demo is not just women. Its women 40+ (college educated, above average household income). Guess I should've been more specific.

I really thought I had till 1 Feb to start my campaigning for VDay. I will get everything going asap. Thank you.

Would you have an advice regarding my target demo?

You still have to think about the other questions I posed as a start.

Just to add contrast, think of how you would market to a 45 year old lesbian celebrating the first Valentine's Day with her legal spouse vs. a 45 year old divorcee 'cougar' spending V-day with her new cub boy-toy. Likely to be totally different approaches, right?

Whichever sub-niche you look at, though, the bottom line is romance and pleasure. You want their V-day buy from you to be a splurge (more $), a treat for them and their partner. Make them feel good about themselves, and they'll follow you forever (like most other human beings)...

Sexuality has not been a preference for my niche (anti aging sub niche) but I can see how I could funnel a slice of my target demo and make them feel as valid... even special.

Thanks again John. I'll try and figure something out.

I just picked that example because its one that most people don't think of.

Look at most of the anti-aging stuff aimed at women. Most of it is about staying attractive to men, right? What if being attractive to men wasn't part of the equation?

Most marketers would leave it up to that portion of their market to make the leap. Address it directly and build a bridge they can easily cross, instead...

Anti aging products specifically for lesbians might be hard to come by. But I get what you are saying and I could/will air out the issues of sexuality and aging on my boomer blog and try to build something from what I find there.

                  Working on the bridge...

The products don't have to be specifically for lesbians or any other group. Just your approach.

And don't fixate on that group alone. Look at multiple sub-niches, and give each of them the same bridge-building treatment.

Talk to them about the benefits of the product as they specifically relate to the group.

That's what I was trying to say... will get a discussion going. generate some real time ideas and use them. But should definitely not fixate on sexuality.

                      Thanks John.

You must start marketing for V day much earlier than Feb. 1. Sometimes it's all about volume. For V day, since it's such an easy seasonal to make $, the more you have out there, the better. So I would say, start putting in work as early as you can - 8 weeks out is what I like to target as a minimum amount of time. But don't be discouraged that we only have a short time left. Get online and start marketing. If you work hard with the remaining time you have left 'till V day, you may just be surprised by the amount of conversions you make when it's all said and done.
