Hi all, I'm close to finishing my site and I was wondering on ways I can get a lot of traffic. I hear backlinks, keywords and having a lot of content are a few useful tools to achieving this, could anyone else give me some good ideas? Or ways that you did it?

-Thanks guys and girls!

One of the easiest ways to drive traffic to a brand new website is to find niche-specific message boards and begin posting away. Juice yourself into the niche community (find out what they talk about, how they do things, etc) and then use your sig line to advertise your site. Traffic will come. If you can find about five of these niche-specific forums and you'll see a ton of targeted traffic come pouring in.

Next up is SEO. Start researching backlink building, on page optimization and try to get your site ranked for most popular keyword in your niche.

Start a Facebook fanpage. Pay some guys on fiverr to blast your page to their thousands of friends. It's definitely worked for me on many of occasions and now Facebook is a huge traffic driver for my sites.

You can even start tying everything together in a big traffic funnel. Use the message boards to send people to your Facebook fanpage, which will then funnel them to your website, hopefully having them LIKE the page in the process.

Bottom line is just make as much noise as you possibly can (or afford).

Backlinks, keyword optimization, and article writing.

Especially the article writing. Write some quality content for EzineArticles. You'll come across as knowledgable in your field, and you'll get a high PR backlink out of it to boot.

You heard correctly! Once I have completed setting up one of my sites, I start building quality backlinks to it. Don't waste your time with PR 0 etc, go after PR3-4 +. This means less work and more link juice.

For Google traffic, you need back links to prove your value to Google's search algorithms...

For people to click your links directly, you need to appeal to their interests, wants and desires with the content you present to the world. Talk to them about what they want to talk about.

Just as I am talking to you now in the forum environment, answering your question in a way that makes sense to you, you can do the same in a forum environment, attract the interest of others, and perhaps some click-through traffic to your links in your signature.

Stay away from adwords until you know exactly what you're doing. It's a GREAT way to lose money.

You sound like you're very new to internet marketing in general, so I'd caution against using Adwords initially, because it can be a minefield for a newbie, and I don't want to see you losing your shirt with it.

If you're truly serious about wanting to utilize this, try educating yourself first. An excellent primer on this would be Perry Marshall's free 5-day course - Google AdWords Advertising and How to Advertise on Google

Submit your site to as many search engines. Submit your site to as many privately run Link Directories/Search Engines as you can find. These will not generally boost your traffic in any major way but will help to maintain steady stream of qualified visitors. Have Dynamic content on your site - Message Board, Links Directory, Guest Book, Online Search, Picture Gallery, Quote of the day, News items, Site Search, Links Engine ... It all makes for a more enjoyable experience for your visitors ... and interested visitors come back.

1 - take a look at your site and note who your target audience is
2 - where do people "hang out" online?
3 - locate these areas and join the conversation
4 - use large traffic sites such as youtube and facebook to boost traffic
5 - narrow your targeting - how many sub niches or sub areas does your traffic have? - For example in the dog training niche, there are different breeds, different areas of interest such as breeding, house breaking etc.

As a complete newbie, this thread has been incredibly helpful.

The main thing I have found so far as a beginner, is to focus on developing that content before anything. If you focus too heavily on page rank, you'll be driving people to a site but give them no reason to stay.

Social Media, SEO, social proof included on your site (for when the ball get's rolling), articles, quality backlinks (rather than tons of usless backlinks). Mouth to mouth advertising, this means you need to provide unique quality, but this last method is not easy to achieve.

Content is king so make sure you optimize your site and that you have quality content first. It won't matter how much traffic you get to your site if you bounce rate is through the roof because of poor quality content.
Then, like many others have already said article submissions to high PR article directories, web 2.0 sites, social bookmarking, etc. Those things can get you backlinks and targeted traffic

Well, the whole idea was to write articles. Do you guys feel like I should first write a lot of articles and add tons of content to the site before I start bringing traffic in? How many articles would I have to write before I can start bringing people to my site? I get it, people don't want to see an "empty" site. So my questions is at what time is the right time to bring traffic in?

Do on-page SEO to get to the first page of google where the traffic is. Fire quality backlinks to it too. Writing articles & submitting them to article directories help with getting traffic. The readers read your article & clivk on your link you provide.

Basicly biggest truth is that content is the "KING"!
So before you start with any promotion make sure to have someting usefull to offer to your visitors, that is if you wish for them to get back some times or to recomend you to next friend and so on (viral).
After producing great content rest is easy involving a lot of work
You must start building support sites, commenting on blogs, social bookmark, forum posts...
