Could this increase your sales?

I dunno if you guys heard but today Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales told the BBC that his site receives more donations when the use his face on banner ads.

"Those banners outperformed the other ones two-to-one," he said. "I think maybe because no-one wants to see my ugly mug anymore. People thought: 'let's give the guy the money so he'll go away'."

So what's it mean to you and me?

Well, after spending the morning looking into this to find some hard facts for you guys, I found this PDF in Google Docs Exploring Human Images in Web Design - check it out because it raises a few interesting points that we (might) be able to use to our advantage.

A few years ago I did my own test and found that it didn't matter which part of the human body was shown, be it face, hands or any other part of the body (..don't.. just don't), as long as the viewer could recognise it as human - compared to webpages that didn't display human images, which didn't perform as well as the ones that did.

So anyway, this BBC report reminded me about this stuff, hope you find it as interesting as I do.

Thanks for sharing this, Mick. This report has confirmed my suspicions that I've had for a long time (but had no hard, extensive facts to back it up with) - that an internet is still perceived as a cold and anonymous place by many, and anything on your website that adds a human touch (personal video, photo, audio, etc.) is bound to increase response and also conversions.

Reading this thread reminded me of the ads I have been seeing lately for knee replacement surgery. It is a graphic ad showing the bone and muscle of a knee. The image is highly polished, and with a little imagination it could be seen as, how shall I put this nicely, 'other more exciting parts of the human body, especially if one is a heterosexual male'. The image is very attention-getting. I wouldn't want one like it on any of my sites...just sayin'

Good post - and interesting points. I have read that, from a psychological perspective, a picture of someone's face gets more positive attention if they are considered "baby-faced".. for example, certain studies showed that jury members were more likely to acquit a potential murderer if he was baby-faced. So maybe that's something to consider too

      Hi Mick,

This might be something worth looking into.

The internet can be a very cold, machine-like place, and I think people are naturally more open to things that have more of a personal feel to them.

However, I think people still need to practice discretion when posting their images and information on the internet.

Unfortunately, the internet is not a safe place and is filled with hoodlums such as identity thieves.

I can also see how this can be abused, if you post an image of a cute little baby it will be easy to get people to click on the ad.
