Big site or 1 product niche site?

There are pros and cons of each Big site Vs niche sites, here are some pros and cons of each I found. What are yours?

Big Authority site pros:

1. one domain buying (cheaper)
2. easier to get backlinks to, instead of 12 sites
3. Big G. loves big authority sites
4. Maybe bit easy to maintain (do not have to add template, plugins all again)
5. one can have umbrella list of products (example: all digital cameras) in one place. having more choices of products.

Big Site Cons:

1. Take time to set up.
2. People might be confused with various posts and products links.
3. Not specific enough.

Niche site pros:

1. Very specific to individual product, like modelname-size-brand
2. having keyword in URL helps already
3. People searching for specific keyword are already looking to buy, no need to pre-sell them
4. only 2-10 pages, easier to create, fast up and running

Niche site cons:

1. Way too specific for product, make sure there enough searches
2. You may need to create more niche sites to take care of same brand's other popular products, may need many niche sites
3. You need to find backlinks for each sites, instead of just one.
4. Some niche sites can look spammy (not all)

To niche site or authority site, that is the question? What works for you all, please add your list here for others.

I would always suggest starting with small niche sites until you figure out how things work. Then when your ready you can start your 1 big website.

I personally run a big website for my primary (offline) business, and a niche site connected to it for marketing purposes.

As stated above though I think when starting a small niche site is better.

    • Authority site all the way. In one month I've taken a no name blog towards the top of google for a few search terms and have 100 high quality subscribers. Totally worth it compared to making small niche sites.

I then create small niches which point to the larger site.

        Hi newnoob,

I think starting off with a niche website is the best way to go for new internet marketers.

It will give them a chance to really learn what it takes to run a website, how to drive target to their site, how to rank up for their keywords etc.

Starting off with the “big website” is usually too overwhelming for young marketers and they usually don’t have the skill set to allow them to pull it off. Also, starting with a small niche will allow the marketer to see progress earlier, which may make the difference between them giving up and pressing on.

This, it could be argued, is actually a pro: "takes less time to set up than 12 separate sites"?

This, it might be suggested, is too ill-defined and ill-justified to be a con: why is "non-specific" bad?

Well, yes and no ... some keywords can cover several products. This one's true only in so far as it relates to the product-name as a keyword. Which is perhaps more relevant to Amazon affiliates, and equivalents, than to some others?

Oversimplification here, I think? This isn't at all well-defined and by no means always true. Some of them are looking for free information. Others are looking only for bonuses/discounts and may not be willing to buy from your site.

So can some product-sites, believe me.

For myself, I wouldn't dream of having separate sites in the same niche for different products, nor of combining two or more niches on one site. These plans seem to me to be almost all disadvantage. (I'm not an Amazon affiliate, though, or anything similar, and this may change one's perspective).

Personally I use use niche sites to link back to
what I call my authority site (Big Site).

    Works for me.

I would say go for small one product niche site. And try capturing niche market. They are always willing to pay you what you want. So it is best to go for this. But remember quality matters a lot if you go for one product. So quality of product as well as website will be success factor.

What are you good at? Everyone is usually good at something. Start a site on that with a good domain name, and just work on it. Start small, then scale up when ever you feel comfortable..

In my opinion i would go for both, let's say a big site with scripts and after that you can create subdomains with the main keyword of the niche.
