I don't do much linking anymore, but there are some really powerful back links that I easily create once and awhile, and they make a huge difference.

Go to local newspaper sites for different States or whatever your site could be related with to those States. If you mention any State anywhere on your site, then go to that State's list of newspapers.

Sign up and create a username etc.

Make the odd comment on one of their news articles that is even slightly related to your domain. Make a quick comment referencing the article properly (READ THE DAMN THING FIRST).

Drop your link in the comment. Sometimes I mention in brackets for them to remove it if it's not allowed.

Guess what. Many of these newspaper sites are running on old and unsophisticated scripts, resulting in DOFOLLOW links.

Their admin people are really slack usually and even approve live links, and if not they leave the dead link (which still helps I believe).

Their staff often doesn't even know the value of the link you are leaving.

Make sure you sign in using their local ZIP code and City name.

Google sees a link from these established news organizations as a BIG DEAL.

Have fun.

That's a great tip and is so true. I have a decent list somewhere that I built a while back of local news sites in different areas that allow you to create blogs, too. Very cool stuff. I was told some of those sites were in Angela style packets, though, so I kinda stopped using them. Haven't really tracked anything on them as of yet.

Terry, just to be sure I understand, do you mean put the live link right into your comment and not as a profile link?

        Exactly what I was thinking.

Thank you for the tip! I checked it out on a news site I visit regularly and after looking at the source, it was a no follow. I'll check other places.

This are some tips regarding backlinking.

    URL directories
As old as the stars (almost) but still definitely important in any back-linking strategy. As there are thousands of these directories on the internet, you really need to use directory submission software to save yourself some time.

    Natural back-links
As your site's stature grows, you will automatically receive organic back-links from other web masters.
This will take time as your site grows and the content becomes more valuable.

Forums, guest books and comment boxes
By leaving comments in forums, guest books or blog comment fields, you can generate back-links in an instant.
Remember to put your URL in your signature.

    Article Marketing
These have become intensely popular recently and are widely touted as the most efficient way to build back-links to your site.

    Blogging
By creating a free account with one of the blog hosting providers, you can set up your own blog in 5 minutes.
By creating related content in your blog, you can sprinkle in links back to your main site as often as you wish.

A link from a comment is better then a directory lick.

Nice tip, sounds fair enough. I will definitely give it a try and see what results out of it.
Most of the time though I think this will only work if what you are commenting on is actually related to your site. Well I think.
