What is the better free blog platform... blogger.com or wordpress.com?

    If you are beginner Blogger is nice. But for me, I personally use wordpress. I like it applications.

    I just have experience with blogger, which being owned by Google might cause my little sites to get moderate traffic with no promotion on my part. There's no charge for using your own domain name.

    Wordpress.com might be a better educational stepping stone in a career development, with your own hosted wordpress sites being the next step.

    Wordpress has some nice SEO plugins you can install, with a sitemap plugin and google map plugin, and many many other plugins (adsense plugin, membership plugin), so, many cool plugins.

    I would purchase your own domain, and hosting and host your wordpress blog on your domain.

    www.sportsfan54.com/blog, and add some SEO plugins.

    At least this way it is yours, you own it (as it is your domain)

    Blogger is owned by google, so they will own your blog. Some people have said google have taken their blogs offline for xyz reason.

    Either Blogger or WordPress, it wont matter for ranking. Its all about content and distribution of the content with backlinks. Google loves fresh content!

      Content is the important thing that matters.

      A lot of the common platforms are now fairly stable and it all comes down to personal taste.

      Im am probably the most non-technical person on this forum and i like the way blogger works. Its simple, its clean and it works.

      I just cant get my head around wordpress.

      But in saying that, wordpress has some amazing things you can do with it. Including the desings. Ive seen some sites that are 5 star.

      I dont think any has advantages over the other when looking at SEO factors personally. I would need to see proof.

    If you are going the free route, I prefer Wordpress. It's a great platform that's full of potential.

    Also, if you continue in IM, more than likely you will eventually start setting up your own domain names with Wordpress, and you will already have experience with using it.

      My understanding is that Wordpress' free platform does not allow advertising, etc. So Blogger would win by default, and it gives you the opportunity to sign up with Adsense AND Amazon's affiliate program.

      As others have said, getting your own domain/hosting is preferable and then installing Wordpress.

    I'd go with Blogger because from what I've heard, Wordpress doesn't allow blatant advertising - so you'll have more freedom with Blogger.

      There are no plug-ins for Wordpress.com, which is the free blogging platform.

      Plug-ins are available only when you use Wordpress.org with your own domain name and hosting.

    If you are just a beginner blogger is good for it is easy to use and user friendly indeed. But for now wordpress is very common and many people uses it, but if your post looks promotional and really promote a certain website unfortunately wordpress banned your account.

      If you're going for a free blog platform keep in mind that Wordpress.com does NOT allow affiliate links or promotions.

      If you can't get your own domain (for whatever reason), go with Blogger.

      I would really advise getting your own domain, though.

    If you don't have your own web hosting account and domain name, Blogger is the way to go. I heard that Wordpress.com doesn't like affiliate links.

    But if you have your own web hosting and can buy a domain name, a self-hosted Wordpress is the best option.

    If you're really strapped for cash, get a $0.99 (first month only) web hosting at Hostgator (search for the promo code on Google) and then buy a .info domain name at Godaddy for only $1.99. So that's a grand total of only $3.

    Look for free Wordpress themes and now you have your own website.

    I love the flexibility and plugins that come with the self-hosted version of Wordpress. It does require that you purchase your own domain name and have hosting, but it's worth every penny - this is a web property that you control, unlike blogspot which is under the control of Google.

      The decision between wordpress.com and blogger.com is a pretty easy one, unless you want just a "hobby blog", because wordpress.com allows no form of monetization at all. Even an affiliate-link will get your blog deleted there as soon as they notice (which can happen if a competitor "reports" it). So for any purposes related to deriving income from a blog, wordpress.com is out of the question.

      Blogger's slightly better, statistically, but still highly unsafe and ill-advised. Although some people have had blogs there with affiliate links for years without a problem, there's also a huge number of Warriors who've had those blogs deleted (especially recently).

      Blogger's interpretation of their own terms of service is, at best, inconsistent and idiosyncratic. They have this strange clause in there about using a Blogger blog for the purposes of generating traffic to other sites, and sometimes they interpret that to include affiliate-links.

      A quick read of all the threads started by Warriors who've had Blogger blogs deleted "arbitrarily" in the night will soon put you off using that.

      For myself, I wouldn't touch either, but statistically Blogger's a far better bet.

      Many of the posts above attempting to compare Blogger to Wordpress.com haven't quite appreciated that the question related to wordpress.com, not to self-hosted Wordpress from wordpress.org, which is a whole different, far safer and more professional proposition.

      Self-hosted       Wordpress can also be "a free blogging platform", of course, simply by using the reliable, professional, advertising-free, widely recommended free hosting at Byethost.com (and maybe one or two others). Some professional marketers have been using that successfully for years without encountering any problems at all.

      Contrary to popular belief, the perspectives of safety and security of your business don't relate to whether it's free or paid-for: they relate to the host's terms of service, policies and procedures.

        True. There are a lot of people here who post without reading the whole question or the responses. It's common in another 'info' topic we discuss a lot here too.

        As for the question, as long as you aren't monetizing in any way and aren't building a blog purely for SEO purposes (aka a link farm), I would recommend WordPress.com over Blogger if you want to learn blogging basics. You can carry the WordPress knowledge over to your own self-hosted WordPress site whenever you want. Moderation is better and less automated on WordPress.com so you aren't likely to be shutdown just because you cut and pasted in an article and hit submit too fast. If your blog is shutdown there it's because you were doing something against their TOS, not because an anti-spam 'bot got confused or a cubicle jockey somewhere had a bad hair day.

          For me I would choose both of them to drive traffic.

          Wordpress.com there is a feature that you can index it to yahoo site explorer, bing and google webmaster. But you can't install the all in one seo.

          In blogger.com blog you can add or index them to yahoo site explorer, bing and google webmaster as well. But there is video tutorial on how to put a description on it and keywords.

          Unlike wordpress.com you can't put a description and keywords w/ regards to on page seo.

          ps. Can I ask? Does anyone of you heard about Traffic Rockstar Domination?

          I was planning to purchase that... so what's that all about?

    Wordpress for me, mainly because of all of the excellent plugins for it (if you self host it). Even without the plugins (via Wordpress.com) it is still a great platform.

    Blogger is probably a bit more idiot-proof for the total blogging newbie, saying that, Wordpress is by no means complicated to use.

    Wordpress is understandably getting the most approvals, one of the best things about wordpress for a beginner is that there are free plugins that let you do just about everything, from mailing list and shopping cart integration, to SEO. My two fave CMS are Joomla and Wordpress.

      I am currently only using blogger.com and have not made the leap to self hosted wordpress as of yet. I started using blogger in October of 2010 following Sara Young's Easy Paycheck Formula model.

      To this date I have earned about $800 from using Ezine and Blogger blogspot blogs.

    Neither Actually, I would suggest paying a few dollars for a domain name and hosting and installing wordpress.org on there, the reason being if you use blogger for a while and build your backlinks to rank better over time. when you do decide to make that leap and move your blog over to a self hosted one with wordpress, All those backlinks you worked hard for over the months and even years you will lose as google wont let you take them!

    Who says Google aint evil! Also to be honest if you have a self hosted blog like mine then people who visit will take your blog a lot more seriously, plus you have a lot more control on the blog as regards to the look and feel aas well as plugins and advertising!

    Let me know if you want to set up a self hosted blog as i have written a book on it and would be happy to send it your way!

    Wordpress.org!! All my wordpress.com sites have been deleted for "spamming" although they had very few links and they were to my own sites, each was on a single topic so maybe that is what shut them down? i was really puzzled but guess that was seen as trying to monetize my blog. should have backed up that content!

    Love blogger too but it makes me nervous that they could shut me down any time as well!
