What does "A comment is held for moderation" mean?

Setting up a blog. Not sure if I should have this checked or not.

I want to prevent spam however I also want people to be able to have open discussions. This is a gaming relating blog & that kind of market is very passionate.

I dont really support moderation so I would rather not dictate what people say & do not say on my blog but I sure as hell dont want to erase 100 comments a day full of spam. What to do?

    It's a sad reality, but if you leave blog comments on auto-approve, it's going to get absolutely decimated by viagra/casino/etc spammers. It's up to you, but I can guarantee that you won't like the results if you don't moderate the comments.

      Ok...this is how I have it set up right now. Im a blogging newbie. So what do you recommend I select to prevent all the rubbish spam. thanks!

        Before a comment appears:
        X An administrator must always approve the comment
        X Comment author must have a previously approved comment
        Checking those two will help keep spam from getting posted to your blog. If used in conjunction with Akismet, the amount of actual spam you'll need to sort through will be minimized... greatly.

        It will mean that you will have to approve a comment for someone the first time they post on your blog but, once you've done that, the rest of their comments will go live as soon as they post them (unless they change their eMail address).

        And, on that last point, be wary of spammers who will use the names of popular commenters on your blog in order to sneak through their junk links. They will use your commenters' names, but not their eMail address usually, so the comment will get tossed into moderation. But, since you recognize the name, you may be inclined to think it was accidentally tossed into moderation and approve it. Don't do that. Double-check the eMail address, especially if it looks like a long-time user is starting to spam your blog. It's probably not the actual user but a spamming trying to pose as one.

          I already have TanTanNoodles spam filter which is described as:

          A plugin that does a simple sanity check to stop really obvious comment spam before it is processed.

          Heard this was really good

          Would you advise to enable Akismet as well?

            I'm not familiar with TanTanNoodles. Maybe someone who is can comment on that. I've only ever used Akismet.

              I'm sure I've ordered it with cucumber and Hoi-Sin sauce in the past: I think the Peking version's probably better than the Cantonese style.

    You get to review the comments and decide which to publish and which to delete (if that's what you want and how you set it). (Is this "Akismet" or something?).

    You need to have comments held for moderation, then. In that niche you'll eventually be spammed very heavily, if you don't.

    I highly recommend moderating comments to avoid spamming. Spams will not do your page any good so better get it cleaned up.
