Brandable Domain or Keyword Domain

What would interest you more if you were looking to buy a domain

Dog Training Reviews

or a more brandable domain like

Dogster

I notice most high end traffic sites are branded sites, where the domain has little to nothing to do with the topic of the topic of the site

For instance

Amazon
Dell
HP
IGN

Personally I look at that exact question with another question:

    > whats your budget?

To create a brandable item, you often need a bigger budget to bring it to everyone's attention.

With a keyworded domain name, you rank it easier (well, sort of... in small niches...) and you can keep a shorter budget.

People make good money selling to the rich. But the rich got rich selling to the masses.

      VERY well put!

I have a few brandable domains that rank really well, but it did take a little more time and resources to get them to rank that well.

Keyworded domains are a lot easier to rank for so... I agree, it comes down to what your budget is!

It is always easier for customers to know what your site is about if you go for keyword-rich domain names. It also makes it easier for search engines to rank as well. However, branded domain names have the advantage of being catchy when they do catch on though the downside is that it takes more effort to market it so people know what the site is about. An ideal solution is a combination of the two, a domain name that has the keyword in it but is also short and catchy enough to be a potential brand name.

That's the golden grail! A short, catchy name that contains your main keyword. I have spent hours (and hours) on a search for a good one. Even if you devote a whole day to it if necessary... it will repay you hugely over time.

For quick results go for keyword domain and if your in it for the long run and don't need immediate results go for the brandable domain. You could always setup pages for SEO www dot dogster dot com/dog-training-videos/

I'm not convinced that having an exact match domain is a crucial as everyone thinks. It definately helps, but with enough backlinks you can rank 1.

Keyword domain absolutely every time unless I am starting a brand new company with my own manufactured products or services that I want to separate from the pack.

As said above, a brandable will either take you a ton of money to get known, years or an extreme amount of work or luck...and often all four.

With a logical keyword domain that people are already using to find stuff on the internet you will already have that advantage, all it will likely cost you is some initial money.

And do not get suckered into thinking you can only have .com or nothing, a keyword in a lesser extension is orders of magnitude better than a domain that has random words shoved onto the front or back.

I recently bought an electronics domain in .info that gets 40,000+ exact Google searches a month, I could've got a .com by shoving "the" or "best" or "shoppe" somewhere in it, but it would've made it worthless and as it is, an info pick-up for $2 is now worth far more than 99.9% of the .com crap that gets registered each day.

Yes but do you get those 40,000 a month searches? and why is it worth more?

Any thoughts on using a subdomain and folder system
//keyword.myname.com/product/ to Brand and SEO simultaneously ?

I am thinking of reviewing CB products and hope individual page ranks will benefit from the overall domain content.

Do many visitors type a URL ? Most or all click on a link and bookmark it ?

brandable domains work well IF you have a nice marketing budget. If not use an aged or generic domain tied to your niche!
