Can IM be Considered as Work Experience?

Hi,

I have a full time job now.. I want to hang on to it for another 2-3 years to get work experience and then go on to do MBA...

My question is.. Can we consider IM as work experience while applying for MBA admission?

I am into IM for over 2 years and would love to do that while I prepare for my MBA...

What is your take on this?

Thanks

No - of course not. Playing around on the internet doesn't qualify you for anything.

But get it right and you won't need an MBA.

He is right on both points, "playing" is worthless, but owning your own business qualifies.

Like he says, if you do it right, you will probably not want that MBA.

How can I own a business if I am into affiliate marketing, creating products and selling them?

Can that be considered as a business even if I do not go for a LLC or anything like that?

An LLC is just one of the many forms of operating a business. You can act as a sole trader for as long as you want. Just set up a bank account with the company name of your choice and start trading.

Work experience is the linking of a period of activity in a work setting (whether paid or voluntary) to the programme of study, irrespective of whether the work experience is an integral part of the programme of study. So i think IM can still be consider as work experience.

          BUT.......

Most business qualification structures require appropriate experience. This usually means being able to identify the company's mission statement, processes, interactions etc....

Playing on the internet in your spare time won't usually count.

Definitely - typically for MBA programs they'll want real-world work experience that can be verified by an employer, and IM certainly does not fit the bill!

Employers don't want to see people with their own business. It makes you a high risk candidate.

They figure you will leave or take company secrets for your own use.

    Think about it...

Depends on how well you did and how honest you want to be. I had IM on my Resume with figures of how much I made during X timeframe with X Capital. It impressed many.

Yes, your internet marketing will count as work experience in the eyes of an MBA program if it is the source of your income. The admissions committee will likely look quite favorably upon this particular brand of work experience, because it shows that you have internal drive, creativity and ingenuity that no amount of employee work experience can provide.

An MBA teaches you how to be an entrepreneur at a high level. By high level, I mean that it teaches sophisticated skills involving finance, statistics, human resources and organizational management. When they see someone who has already succeeded at their own business without the help of an MBA, they look at you as a prime candidate for business success at a high level (i.e. venture capital, IPOs and the whole lot).

Here is the essential question admissions committees ask themselves about a candidate: can this person graduate in the time allotted, use this degree, become successful and in 10 years donate money to this institution. If you succeed even to a small degree in IM, the answer will be an unequivocal yes, and you will be a very competitive candidate for the top programs (provided, of course, that you have the appropriate academic qualifications).

I hope this helps. I personally find the Ivory tower to be a miserable place :-/

Thats quite inspirational.... I read in some other thread where a fellow warrior mentioned that we are in the publishing industry... Thats sounds nice...

Since we are already generating money, that does show that we are really business minded right?
