If you need a free alternative, you can't go far wrong with CAM Studio. If you google it, there are several sites you can download it from.

Jing is made by the same people as Camtasia -- $14.95 a year for Jing Pro, and they also have a free version. I haven't used either since I have Camtasia but have heard positive reviews.

I use browser based applications because a)I'm cheap b)I use a mac

It's usually not worth it to spend so much, when I'm only going to record a few simple screencasts for a blog.

Here is what I use:
Free -only $9/year to get rid of their watermark and access additional features
Screencast-O-Matic - Free online screen recorder for instant screen capture video sharing.

I forget if this has a watermark or not, but it's completely free. It has issues with firefox sometimes - but for the price you can't beat it.
ScreenToaster - Online screen recorder. Capture screencasts instantly.

I went out and downloaded all the free alternatives, and ended up screwing my computer up a bit {I've fixed it now}... I immediately pulled out my CC and bought Camtasia Full

Ok just having a play with camstudio and its pretty sweet good enough for what I need it for any how....

Also what's the best format to save the videos in? AVI or swf?

I can do far more with CamStudio (Free) and Corel Video Studio X3. Honestly Camtasia hogs my system resources to the point of frustration that I just avoid using it anymore. (I make long recordings) Yes, that is the latest version 7 by the way.

Now with Camstudio I can do the initial screen recording, then import that file into Video Studio X3. It is a full movie editor with all of C7 features and more, with a simpler user interface and for less than a third of the price. (I think you can get in on sale for about $50).

Try saving in both. There are advantages with both.

SWf is a less used format these days, but has the advantage that it's a smaller compressed file. So if you can get it to work in your web page, it's the fastest way to get your file online and working on the web for people to see.

Whilst you should never upload an AVI for users to stream (because it's gonna be a big file and too big to stream smoothly), the advantage with getting an AVI output is that you can convert it in to other formats easily. AVI is (almost) uncompressed and is the best quality, so you can compress in to other formats from AVI. It gives you more options to play with.

But like I say - if you can get the swf uploaded and working in your webpage - it's the quickest route. I'd always do an AVI output too, so you have options to play with if you have any problems with the swf.

Hope that helps. I didn't want to over complicate things with too much info - but hope that I have provided enough to make it understandable.

I use camstudio for internet marketing and Jing. Both work sufficiently well, but lack some of the functions of Camtasia. But you can't beat the price.

Camtasia just offers a better overall experience, I mean sometimes I'll even pop open Camtasia over Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 for video editing. Provides a very solid and easy to work with video experience.

the is a firefox plugin call 'capture fox' that is
pretty good, and oddly can work outside the
browser window! (obviously FFox needs to be
minimized) no editing though, so you would
still need a video editor.

while cam studio is quite good, the interface is
not exactly easy, but does deliver a clean video.
when camtasia was at v3-5, camstudio was a
surprising contender, but it no competition to
version 7.1 of camtasia.

since you have a month to pay? why not just
create a project with the focus on getting camtasia
paid for from the proceeds? $299 is a steal for what
the program can do (now smart phone vids!)
and will be a useful tool for years to come.

CamStudio is nice if you use another codec and different settings. You must use the
newest Divx Codec for the best quality! The standard codecs are really bad and you wont be satisfied with them. Just made some videos today with Camstudio, looks very nice so far.

I use Jing Pro and am very happy. The cost is basically nothing ($15/year). The only real limitation that will affect 99% of IM'ers is the 5-minute time limit. But for some of us, that's a good thing. It forces brevity and prevents long-windedness (is that even a word?).

The people who bring you GoToMeeting and GoToWebinar also have a nice screen capture video program that I've played around with and like. It's free. Just go to GoView™ Beta : Home

Yup... old thread, but there is an update to the software I mentioned in post #11.

Corel has released VideoStudio Pro X5 which now also includes screen capture abilities. I cannot tell you what a bargain this software was before - for video editing, but now being able to incorporate screencasts as well... for $99 - it's quite a bargain compared to Camtasia ... at least worth the trial if anyone is considering.

Jing Pro has been retired. The free Jing service is 5 minutes long and leaves a watermark.
