Ad blockers versus AdSense

I have an ad blocking add-on for Firefox, and it works great (getting rid of popups, etc), but it blocks Google AdSense.. which made me realize that someone with an ad blocker who views my site will see portions of it just blank! Not only does this lose me clicks/impressions, but it makes my site look a little goofy from their perspective.

What are your thoughts on this? Are there enough people with ad blockers to make this a major issue? What do you do to combat this if you like using AdSense?

    I mean how do you combat the fact that your VIEWERS use AdSense?

    Obviously it is easy to view your own ads -__-

    It depends a lot on the tech knowledge and so forth of the target niche. For example, one site I have is mostly for software developers and I see about 60-70% ad blocking there but even with that the site makes decent money every day. On more consumer-ish niches, I only see about 20-30% blockage, often less.

    To combat it, get more traffic.

    How did you get this estimate? Does it show ad blocking statistics in any of the major analytics systems?

      I compare number of impressions on Adsense vs. the number of impressions from either StatCounter or Analytics. There are probably some fanatics that block even stat counters but I don't worry about them at all.

      It's not something I do all the time though, maybe once a year I'll take a day or two and compare numbers.

        You can let your readers know that your website is completely supported by ad revenue and ask them kindly to disable flash block just for your website.

        In my experience being straight forward and honest always produced the best results.

        Your hardcore members will be more than willing to allow your ads on their browsers.

          Devid beat me to it.

          Couldn't hurt posting a notice asking people to unblock you in a prominent spot on your site. Or direct users to a splash page about it.

          ie:

          I depend on ad revenue to help run this site ... etc.

          Know they have script out there that will block people using ad blockers. Though probably wouldn't be well received by people. Make visitors real likely to X out or hit a back button.

          More than that though ... This gives you a good motivator to find new and improved ( read ... better ) ways to monetize your site traffic.

          Put your thinking cap on ... In general, don't like the internet god corps ... google/facebook/binghooo. There are alternatives to what they have to offer web publishers. They have too much power over the internet imo.

          But yes, if I were into adsense I'd be a little concerned about the ad block craze. Recently read somewhere FF ( my personal browser of choice.) Has gotten up to being like 25% browser share now.

          The most popular add on download for it ... Is adblock plus ... go to the FF add-on page and look at the stats. People are downloading ABP ( others ) at like a gazillion a wk or something crazy. Well more like 900k a wk. But that's still crazy.

          Take heart though ... Something tells me, the adsense people are working on it. When it really starts pinching into google's pocketbk ... They'll come up with a solution to the problem for publishers displaying adsense.

          Cause though like all things the internet gods like google do. Not cause they give a crap about you. But they do, very much give a crap about their ad revenues.

          So hang tight for a bit. Google will probably come up with a solution for you ... Before too long. Not to point cyber fingers or nuttin. But you have to see the irony in you stressing about adblockers, but using one yaself.
