Paypal vs Google Checkout

we all heard of those horrible stories about paypal
Many people claim that they froze money for 180 days etc....
I am not sure if those stories are true or not, but I do think that people would love to have a serious alternative just in case....

I think that at the moment, the only company who can seriously compete with paypal and be a serious alternative for the millions who are using it is Google Checkout
The problem is that as a seller - Google checkout available only in the us and the uk
Many people ask when their service will be available in other countries
I made a quick google search and this is what I found:
About Google Checkout : Google Checkout overview - Google Checkout Merchant Help

Does anyone here knows more details about that? maybe an update regarding this issue?

  • I think the 180 thing is true. They release in in 180 days if they freeze it, depending subject to what the individual case is.

e-junkie or google checkout are some that others use too.
  • I have used Google Checkout to sell products before, and it works just as well as Paypal, in my opinion. It's just a shame that it isn't more widely adopted, even though it's pretty flexible and even deposits the money you receive right in your bank account (unlike Paypal, it's more like a regular merchant account in this regard).
  • Its too bad that not everyone can use Google Checkout. Im still with Paypal but I still feel scared whenever I remember the horror stories about them. There is a good alternative to it though, and its called alertpay.

  • the "freeze" might be for illegal balance. i don't have getting trouble with paypal currently, as my balance are legal.
  • I use e-junkie for downloads on a lot of my sites
and they offer both Paypal and Google Payments.
    It gives customers a choice.
Most know this but I am just trying to help Sam out.

  • i just saw this post after my post regarding the same issue. Paypal is becoming a dictator of sorts and just shutting down accounts without notice just because they don't like your content. I checked their terms of service and it seems that they don't really indicate what is acceptable content and what isn't. My ghostwriting business is pretty benign and in its infancy, but my revenue is steadily increasing and I'm afraid that Paypal may just get a bug up their butt about it and give me a problem. i hadn't heard about e-junkie and I'll have to look at that as an alternative.
    Thanks!!

Well unfortunately, proceeds from sales through e-junkie still go through a paypal account, bummer...;(

Yes, it is true what it said by paypal, but unfortunately the google checkout payment system is available only in the U.S.A and the U.K. Hope they are going to make it available World wide, because i had it with paypal.
  • Paypal is not good for freelancers. Even though most still use it. I spent some time writing as a freelancer and if a buyer requests a refund they get it. Its simple and easy. Then if you try to explain your side to paypal they freeze your account because your selling not physical material. So, if you can not prove that you shipped something its not going to work.

I work with Google Checkout right now.
  • well that sounds bad luck if Google checkout is only available on some areas. Since I might switch to another alternative coz I am experiencing pay pal delayed payments.
  • Google vs PayPal in terms of merchant accounts is not an issue in 99% of the world. To keep up to date with what countries Checkout is available in, you can always refer to the Google About page at Google; search for:
"About Google Checkout : Google Checkout overview"

Personally, I've used PayPal for over 10 years without any issues at all. Not one dispute, not one stopped payment.

Moreover, if you're going to sell anything that might be regarded as a little raunchy, you should read their Acceptable Use policies, AND contact that department to request clarification BEFORE you start selling using PayPal.

I've recently done this for a biker T-Shirt site thats got some saucy slogans on it. A prompt email response from a PayPal support staff member stated he'd check with the supervisor. A couple of days later, the supervisor emailed me with a definitive statement that the t-shirt material was fine and did not contravene the rules.

However, if you sell first and think later - you've no cause for complaint if your account is locked!
  • i don't have problem with paypal since i start using it in 2006, may be i don't have too much money in the paypal account

i fell that google checkout is not commonly used.

    • Just wanted to chime in - we were members with Paypal for more than 10 years. We sold on average over $50,000 per month through our online hobby shop with maybe 3-5 problem transaction a YEAR! Then PayPal decided that they want to make a 'reserve' on our account for problem transactions. The reserve was 20% of each transaction until a total of $10,000 was reached! This was a great hardship because our profit margins were not 20%. We also occassionally sold on ebay. I sold a used broken item clearly stated in the title and description and even added broken photos of the damage. The buyer complained it wasn't new, said he sent it back, never did - and never provided a tracking number, and Paypal fully refunded him. Had another customer who said that another site was offering additional accessories that were NOT included in what I was selling and PayPal refunded to him the full retail value of the additional accessories. PayPal was a complete nightmare. We closed our business after 6 months of that nonsense and I had to wait 6 months after 45 days (the complaint time) of my last transaction before they would refund my reserve.
  • I've had a lot of issues with PayPal.

More than once I have called PayPal to ask if something was okay or to resolve a problem only to get my account locked a few hours later. When I call back they say the person who said things were okay was not high enough on the ladder to tell me that.

Only two weeks ago I had my account locked because of a duplicate account in my name that was in the negative. Thing is, they locked my account six months ago for that same account and I called and mentioned I would have been 14 when the account was opened and after an investigation they ruled it identity theft. It took almost a week to get my account unlocked the second time!

I still use PayPal but when I talk to a client I tell them I prefer AlertPay and I do get a lot of people paying through AlertPay now!

    • Thats pretty good news to hear. If AlertPay is being accepted by more customers then it seems its a viable alternative. I had read here on WF that typical customers preferred PayPal by a wide margin.
  • Neither is the optimal option, but if I had to choose, it would be PayPal. IMHO, Google just can't be trusted.

I did recently sign up for AlertPay. We will see how that goes.
  • I prefer Paypal over Google Checkout because I have a download link on my thank you page and with Google Checkout, your thank you link is visible in the code they provide you.

  • As compared with Google Checkout,Paypal is more flexible,API support, withdraw options and available in many countries.
And one more I don't want the Google will have the complete control over web
