What is your best forum marketing strategy?

I've hang out in this forum for about five days... (Even if I'm joining this forum two years ago)

My initial intention is to practice forum marketing strategy that I already know and put it into action.

I read some post here, some thread, and I know that there is demand for affiliate marketing, and since I'm an affiliate marketer (who want to be product owner) I create my product based on demand here, set up my squeeze page, payment system, and ask for improvement in my sales letter.

My forum marketing strategy is to build trust here. My day one goal is to create 15 post before I start putting my first signature file. It is quite fun and addictive, so I stretch my goal to 25 posts before I start making my first signature and pitching on my signature.

Okay, all done...

Next step: I'm creating thread where I leak chapter one of my product, creating more thread where I leak the essence of my free report. I bump my thread by adding more valuable content (because that is the ethical way to do) and reply on any question.

For this afternoon only, I already got 6 downloader for my free report (yes I track every link of mine that I put in this forum). And I can say that it is quite success even if I still not generate any sales.

I already have some ideas on how to improve my marketing that I'll implement later.

Even if I don't quite satisfied with the result (I haven't generate sales yet) I'm still glad and willing to move on (hopefully with more success in the future).

Actually, I kind of expecting this (low sales) to happen because in this forum, user are mainly marketer and usually marketer can not sell to another marketer.

Well... that is my forum marketing strategy. Now, how you do your forum marketing strategy? Any ideas will be great!

      Guys, stick to Matt's advice...

If you spam, your account will be banned. If you are smart marketer, you think in long term. So don't spam and have a healthy account. That's good for your profits.

Useful post is kind of subjective, but I agree... If you post valuable post, people are more likely to click your signature. If you help people, people are more likely to help you.

      • Yes it's all about building trust and offering quality advice. I know from personal experience if someone give a great piece of advice I will look down and see what else they are offering.

So far, I notice the threads that get the most views and replies are the ones designed to give valuable informations, success stories, "how to do what i did to make money" etc...

So, I guess the smart thing to do to get some trust and a good reputation here is simply by sharing what you know.

You are correct. If you post something valuable, people will love it, and they'll response to say thank you or develop your ideas. But you also must put good title on your thread to get maximum clicks.

Nice addition tpw... I'm trying to get noticed and stand apart form the crowd at the moment. I have little difficulties in making people laugh though... I don't really good at joking.

You already have strategy. You put your link in signature right? That is your strategy. You just don't try to maximize it.

It is good to get some friends. But I'm marketer also. I try to getting click as well as friends. That's just the way I do thing.

Anita: I hate to disagree with you in public, but...

#8 and #9 are sometimes rules.

On #8, be respectful to most people, but know when it is okay to stand against idiots and show some character and backbone to show people who you are, by demonstrating who you are against.

On #9, do stay out of the line of fire when you are clueless and do not understand why you believe what you believe. When you see an opportunity to stand in the line of fire to better define who you are and why people should like you, if you calculate the risks to be in your favor, jump in with both feet.

However, the question is "What is your best forum marketing strategy?" and MY best forum marketing strategy includes not getting in between you and the idiot(s) du jour!

Maybe once I've been on the forum for years, have thousands of posts and hundreds of thanks, both given and received, my strategy will include the occasionally ass-whoopin'.

          Maybe.

          Maybe not.

Judging by number of post that you already have, you must be already got sales on your product or service or at least subscribers on your list right?

I never knew that there is video creation service like animoto. I try its 30 seconds video, put a nice music, and I got quite cool looking video made.

I'm not quite satisfied with the time length though... 30 seconds is just too short. Well, but what can I say, it's free after all.

I check your youtube channel too. You got good video that made from animoto right? Your traffic strategy using facebook picture also good. But I think I won't use that traffic strategy because too time consuming (finding picture, ask for their permission, tag them, and I'm not quite convinced with the result)

It is always easier to turn my report into slide show, and spread it via scribd. Or using existing report and submit it to ebook directory.

That give me nice targeted traffic in competitive keyword phrases. Perhaps you'll try it in the future because your free report is as cool as mine.

Typically, tpw, AnitaCross, and kweb777 hit the strategies you need to use. Especially with tpw’s third tip. Don’t try too hard in answering the questions especially if you're not knowledgeable about it. Although you can use references, interpretation may be different unless you’re an expert on that field or experienced the same thing. Just answer what you know and be an expert on it.

I know pretty well that being smart-ass in the party can be back fire on you. And that is my main priority to create long sustainable account here... (LOL)

After all, if I answer something that is irrelevant with my knowledge, that ain't gonna convert into clicks. So I always trying to choose quality over quantity when I do forum marketing.

The best way to make others want to know what you know, is to demonstrate your knowledge by helping others. This way people are helped and start to like you, and you build your reputation. It's a win win situation.

This is quite interesting, it being the first time I've ever seen someone use the WF for such intense personal training in this manner. And here I thought that just reading the posts would be enough. Boy, was I wrong. Already you have 'taught' us something without realizing it.

You have received some excellent advice so far covering pretty much everything.

One thing that stands out for me in your OP, however, is that you seem to be looking strictly at using the forum for promotion. You are providing chapters from your report, for instance, with the main purpose of getting sales. The secondary purpose is to provide useful information.

While we all know that the Forum offers an opportunity to make sales, it shouldn't be your main goal.

The WF is a place to share insights, ideas and advice as well as feedback. Through that type of interaction, you gain people's trust so they grow to like you. This causes them to look at your sig file, click to your offer and buy something from you.

Over-deliver on your offer and you will impress your buyers who will then become repeat buyers. But it all starts by being helpful here, rather than sales oriented.

To answer your question about forum marketing ideas. Controversy is always a hot topic. If you can start or participate on those types of threads, you will attract more attention. People will join in, share their views and opinions, and open up some interesting conversations.

Now, you do have to be careful with such threads. While controversy can be good, it can quickly turn into something ugly. Think of it as an opportunity to debate an issue from all sides. Whatever you do, don't get into silly arguments or it will backfire.

Thank you for taking time to reply on my threads Sylvia. It was nice to be noticed by senior warrior.

I admit that I create some threads in order to gain clicks to my site. I won't deny it.

In the process, I don't strictly do like what I said in my OP. I do that, but that is just little activity which I done in this big forum.

I wrote my post like that, to gain some controversy like what you just said. (You are correct when you said controversy can be good forum marketing strategy)

I wrote it like that, to make it relevant with my thread title. "What is your best forum marketing strategy". While sharing my experiences and ideas about forum marketing.

I do agree when you said that WF shouldn't be used mainly for promotion. A lot of members sharing their ideas, insight, knowledge, feedback and as member of this forum, I should keep that tradition.

Thank you for your advice. I think this thread is too bold for some people (yes I think about it when I start this thread).

I hope people don't misunderstand me and gain something from my OP.

      Thanks for your response!

Is it just me that thinks several moderators are probably watching this thread, just praying for a confession from whoever has annoyed them recently LOL

    Back to the OP
I think it's all about being a real person and interacting with others.

The best way to make others want to know what you know, is to demonstrate your knowledge by helping others. This way people are helped and start to like you, and you build your reputation. It's a win win situation.

The best forum marketing strategy that will make you successful is to really integrate yourself into the forum community.

Instead of bombarding forums with offers and begging them to visit your sites, you should give useful advice and try to be as helpful as possible.

Two things will happen if you take that approach: you will make new connections and you will gain an “expert” status.

Once you reach that level, all that will be left to do is to add a smart, conservative signature.

People will click on your links simply because they trust you.

It really is that simply and it will work on any forum for any niche.

I would disagree with you only in nuance.

When most people put the words forum and marketing together, they mistake "form marketing" for "forum advertising".

There is always so much more depth available under the umbrella of marketing than there is under the umbrella of advertising.

It doesn't really matter what word you put in front: forum, article, social media, etc.

Most people understand "marketing" to mean you should blatantly "advertise", but true marketers seldom need to advertise.

There are two parts for my forum marketing strategy

Answering questions - provide useful and informative answers to solve Op's problems.

Starting a thread - Create interesting and intriguing thread, sometime to inspire, sometimes to teach or sometimes to ask for opinions.

That's it....the rest of it lies in your forum sig.....If it's relevant, people will click....

I believe that forums are basically helpful for getting traffic when someone finds you answer interesting for some reason. It’s basically a place for meeting interesting people. You may find affiliates or jv partners, etc. Many things.

I basically come here for learning, and for helping everyone when I can. My secret dream is to find here many affiliates who will actually promote my products, with great enthusiasm.

I think the way many people think about their forum marketing activities is fundamentally wrong.

What we have on a forum is personality marketing at its most basic. To clarify this, I think some people could sell gold bars at a dollar each in their sig and fail, while others provide very little value and succeed.

Even stranger to the uninformed is the fact that the person peddling crap may still be more appreciated than the other guy - after the sale. Not that the people who understand personality marketing tend to peddle crap, they understand their market too well, but they could, and the odd one does do it.

People buy from people - That is a basic principle of marketing, and a forum merely allows this marketing principle to come to the fore.

Ask any salesman out on the forecourt trying to sell a car, they will tell you it is how they act that matters, not what they sell.

I appreciate your opinion but I must say that every form of marketing isn't spamming.

Spammer is pathetic. Marketer can do a lot more than that. You don't get steak in your plate because butcher is a nice person. You got steak in your plate because butcher sell their meat to you with intention to get money.

I can't express myself better than that. I'm sorry. But I don't see anything wrong in what I do. I will contribute to this forum and that is my way to market my product.

      By contributing.

Not because I'm the nicest person on earth, but simply because I want that click on my sig and I won't avoid getting friends, partners, or teachers in the process (I think everyone who put on their sig and honest enough with himself will admit that).

In all honesty, "forum marketing" is almost an oxymoron in the sense that most think of it (using a forum to market).

The reason I think this has been sort of touched upon by a few people in here (who get it) and realize that marketing is a RESULT of what you put into this.

Forums are the building block of trust since if you come in here all of a sudden sharing tons of techniques and what not, you'll gain a reputation quickly as a "go to" guy and that trust will get you lots of subscribers and sales for your business.

"Marketing" in the sense of doing activities like posting articles, building backlinks, setting up PPC campaigns, creating joint ventures, etc doesn't happen here b/c marketing here is an "after though" that happens after the fact.

So for me, my "forum marketing" strategy is simply to build micro assets on this forum with my WSOs and then create posts that inspire a conversation on a topic. Some training, some thought-provoking, some laughing...then I share them with my list to get the conversation rolling and inspire other people to post.

I do this mainly to give traction to ideas and see what other people think so I can fully develop these ideas in my own business. Most of the time, people here are smart enough to pick up on stuff in them and use them to be profitable (or so their posts say). I mainly use this forum as a passive asset for entertainment, market research, developing ideas with the great people on here (my favorite thing to do), and sell products that I know will help people with their problem.

So far, I've had an almost perfect experience here...stick to this strategy and you'll do fine on here.

    Cheers,

    Brad

You risk getting your threads deleted and getting banned if you continue to do it if you post threads just for the purpose of pre-selling/promoting a WSO.

You're missing the point. It's more than just saying Click on my link. Self promotion and pre-selling also involve starting a thread that matches the topic of your signature (i.e., starting a thread about 7 golden rules when creating review sites when you have a 7 golden rules when creating review sites link in your signature, as you did already. That is preselling and self promotion. It is creating a thread specifically to draw attention to your signature and my guess is ... it has already been deleted.

In addition, article type of posts are not allowed on the main forum. There's a thread about it by a mod here:

An easy way to look at forum marketing is to compare it to your local Chamber of Commerce or Rotary Club meetings or any meet-and-greet type of situations that feature business reps coming together.

Now, those organizations do some quality community work and provide a platform for business owners to discuss issues that affect their businesses in some way. It could be anything from local parking bylaws to importation rules.

Apart from operators getting a chance to debate and offer input into those issues, such gatherings can help their businesses to prosper.

The meetings also enable them to share ideas with other operators on many levels, including building joint ventures and finding service and product providers that they can trust. It's much easier to trust someone you have met than a total stranger. They inevitably pass out business cards. But under it all, they are building relationships on many levels.

And so, we have the marketing forums that do the same thing. When those people want to advertise, they do so with their business cards (sig files) or they buy ad space.

Think of the forum as one huge meeting place where you come to build a good reputation for yourself by helping out your community, and you will benefit in many ways besides monetarily.

Forums are driven by people. You could spam and maybe get noticed by a couple people.

Or, you could post stuff that you know about, is valuable (valuable is always subjective, yes, but give your best on stuff you know about) and you'll do just fine. There are no big tricks, or magic bullets here. I've never paid too much attention to the thanks count, or the number of posts.

The people who are really knowledgeable and share their knowledge will stand out, automatically. They don't need a thanks crowd around them, or a huge number of posts to make their contribution stand out. It becomes very obvious who knows their stuff and who doesn't. With forums, just be yourself and contribute as much value as you can.

I'm not too much into forum marketing though. =D
