$4000 in Hole! How can I Recoup Membership Site?

Hi: I bought the Membergate software about a year ago. I have a website that offers legitimate work at home jobs. I researched every single job myself from my 10 years of working from home I learned how to weed out the scams and thought other people would appreciate a site like this. I charged $9.95 month with a $1 - 7 day trial. Well after 1 year I only had a handfull of people who stayed past the 7 day trial. I basically lost $4000. So now I converted it to a Free membership site with the focus of making money via affiliate program links on some jobs, and later plan to add ebooks, ad space, etc. I converted it 45 days ago and have since had a whooping 295 members sign up! Impressive but I'm not making a dime!

Can someone share with me how I can possibly make this site profitable?

I thought about those sites where in order to sign up/register you have to register for at least X amount of sites. This way they can sign up for a few affiliate sites from the beginning and at least I can make a couple of bucks for all my hard work. It would not be any annoying sites that make you buy anything etc., just other free job sites.

So how would I go about making this part of my registration process? Does this sound like a good idea? What type of coder would I need hire to implement this into the registration form and does anyone here d this type of work?
#coder wanted #hire a coder #hole #membership #recoup #site

since you get good amount of members on 45 days, I am guessing you are getting a decent amount of traffic. If it's free traffic (from SEO and such), I suggest you try adsense for starters. "make money online" contents tend to get good CPC and CTR which leads to a good profit.

Hi Dash: Thanks for responding. Yes, its all free traffic! Now with Google Adsense - is there different ad bases I would want to focus on? I mean do they just have text ads with Pay Per Click. Or do they have Pay Per Impressions or Banner Ads too? Which should I focus on?

One thing you could consider is running work from home CPA offers within your membership site, and you could either implement them as banners or as recommended resources within your members' area. You could also set up messages promoting these offers in your autoresponder, and drip-feed them this information over the course of several days.

You will probably struggle with adsense inside a secure members area... not sure how Google would get into the site to index and check the pages for what ads it should show.

Also, if you are losing members after a 7 day trial, then perhaps you need to focus more on OVER delivering to your paid members... think of ways you can increase the number of people who stay after the free trial...

Number one? Offer monthly ongoing services/products that they NEED!

Not if there are some decent "make money online" contents in the home page for the visitors to read that leads to giving the adsense blocks some attention.

Since it's free traffic, then, adsense is definitely worth a test. I mean, every single cent you make is profit. Nothing to lose except for some time and the realization of what doesn't work.

Yes, adsense is very flexible. It allows the people to choose what category of ad to display, shape and size of the ad blocks, location etc...

      Good Luck

Everything you are doing seems to involve being a middleman - guiding people in need to other peoples' solutions.

Bearing in my mind your vast experience, have you considered selling your own expertise to those people in need via your own solutions - IE - make yourself and your expertise your brand, and therefore every action you take is promoting yourself and your business.

Edit - (Just noticed that what I have said is pretty similar to what fated82 said above.)

Can I assume you have a forum set up in the memberships area, if so get really involved and help people , give advice, make it a place that they visit every day.

That in turn will generate lots more members as they'll spread the word.

Then and only then should you try to monetize. Maybe add some coaching or a Pro level.

Focus on what else you can give to your members and sign ups for now to increase value, like MEGA. In time you'll have a much bigger userbase and can start to subtlely implement tests on various networks/offers. Don't follow nobodies dead set advice on how to monetize it right now or else I can see you aimlessly trying a bunch of stuff pissing off your users and wondering why nothing is converting.. ..

I think the first thing right now is noting that you just changed your business model, and you have to settle yourself into it, tweak it, maximize it, don't just run with first draft. I have a site w/4500 members now and still don't monetize it directly, and probably won't for a very long time if ever but that doesn't mean there isn't other ways to monetize the value of the base/community as a whole etc. You should also put some thought into a primary product line aimed right at your users that is internal so you don't have to rely on pushing other peoples products and losing the buyer data/future sales on other items.

You would need to have a solid business model to work and a plan to based your work on...This is what I would do.

    - ask yourself what your target audience want besides work from home jobs what other information or skills do they require? Maybe negotiation skills?

    - create short reports and sell them to your existing members.

    - Create a pro level where members pay a small fee for better and more valuble services

    - Create an affliate programs and recruite afiliates like crazy.....

of coz, needless to say, you need to keep on driving traffic and interacting with your members so that you can drive them from been a prospect to a customer....

For any business to succeed you have to be solving a problem or adding value, so I think really you have to start with the all important question.....

Am I adding value or solving my member’s problems? After all that's why they are joining.

If your loyal members are happy then you may just need to to some viral advertising and social bookmarking, both ideally.

If you put the URL in your sig, I would have checked it out!

Hi: Thank you for all of your advise.

@NCMedia - I think you're right. I will focus on building more members then work on the other ideas as you mentioned.

@JacksonRiddle - Well most members (295) I just acquired in the last 45 days since I made the site free and yes, they have stayed.

@Amy - No the site is 1 years old and I said I just converted it to a free site 45 days ago.

@ExRat - Maybe I was not clear - ALL of the content on the site is from ME, not someone else. I have a database of over 400 legitimate work at home jobs on the site plus articles and blogs that I have written. What I said about other peoples content - was I was going to try to add affiliate links and ebooks to the site to make some profit. However, the site gained the 295 members in 45 days with just the database which I created.

@MThompson - Yes, I have a forum but it's a ghost town. Maybe I need to get a banner designed to make it more prevelant

@KirkMcD - No, and that is a problem I have to fix. Trying to find an email company with automated software that doesn't charge and arm and a leg. I have another site that has a list of 12,000 people and it cost me like $175 through iContact. Any other Recommendations?

      @WD Mino - I like those ideas!

One thing I'd be keen to know is how long the members stay on your site/how long they are active.

If they are active you know your sites pretty decent and you can then slowly promote some affiliate products into the site.

If they don't stay that long, then go back and look at the site.

The average stay time or sticky rate is 3-6 months but that is a general rule of thumb. You will have some who just cannot get enough of it and who become what is called a customer evangelist -to quote Jimmy D Brown

You always need to be promoting your site and getting people into your funnel if you want the site to be a success.

This is a very important point pay attention:

What you have done is taken the First step
The reason you offer a front end free membership is to get members into your funnel.

Once they sign up you should have a one time offer: Hey thanks for joining I have a special offer for you that is only available right now. You already know you are getting access to X but I want to really make sure you get the most out of this site so for 47.00 I am going to give you x and x and x this will really help you in your endeavor online working from home.
Don't use that it is just an example.
On your main site you could have affiliate offers, product recommendations that YOU have used yourself.

You also have to consider that 295 people means that you have now a list of 295 folks. don't be afraid to email them recommend offers, hold member promotions -first one to get 20 sign ups will receive -whatever you want to offer.

You already know people are going to sign up and that is the hard part done your site is converting. now you just ramp it up and take steps to monetize it
    cheers

I think you are on the right track, with the amount of traffic you are getting you should put affiliate links on the membership site, you can also write articles with product reviews to send to your members. This should work out great. You could also try CPA on the website as well.

In my opinion charging $9.95 a month is far too much as you discovered as soon as you went to the free business model. I personally would charge $4.95 a year for this type of information as long as you keep it updated on a regular basis. You can also setup a forum for paid members and send members emails periodically, selling other products and services you may offer or are affiliated with.

    Two words: Banner ads.

Think of your site as if it was a TV show. The show (your content) brings the audience and the commercials (your banner ads) pay for it all.

You can either sell banner space or -- if you have unsold space -- place banner ads yourself with an affiliate link. Just make sure you promote great quality products that are relevant to your members.
