I hate when I go to a website or blog and find this on their "About" page..

"This is an example of a WordPress page, you could edit this to put information about yourself or your site so readers know where you are coming from. You can create as many pages like this one or sub-pages as you like and manage all of your content inside of WordPress."

Oh my goodness, people. Honestly if you want to build a reputable website, at least finish it! If you didn't take the time to either delete or fill in this section, I immediately dismiss your site as novice.

    I think the funniest thing I have ever seen was a guy who was trying to sell me something through a Blog. The problem was that the biography about himself on the referring page and the one on his blog (in the About page) did not match--AT ALL!

    On one site he was a successful lawyer who wanted to show me how to make offline sales by contacting firms with an offer. On his actual blog he was a "starving Customer Service agent for an airline" that changed his ways and "fought to the top!"

    Hmmmm....

    So if your going to finish, at least make it consistent!

    This made me laugh out loud. Don't lie on your "about" page.. and if you do, at least keep it consistent -__- So sad.

        I'd blame poor software design. If WordPress wants to include a generic About page, why not have the default setting as "not published" until the user has actually added some content to it?

        It's easy to blame the user, but the creators of WordPress are just as culpable.

          How are the creators of WP culpable? That's like blaming crayola for kids coloring on the wall. They (WordPress) provide an excellent tool for free, delete the page if you don't want it or take the 7 seconds to write something.

    That's actually a common ideology in the programming world.. if your users are making mistakes, your UI isn't good enough to point them in the right direction.

    That's not to say there are no stupid users.. but if it is a problem so widespread as this one, I can see the point of view that WordPress could make it more obvious that you need to edit that page.

    I recently did an affiliate marketing course - by a Warrior, although I wont mention names - and he uses a site in his course as the example. Although he doesn't actually give the url to the site but it wasn't that hard to find it. I thought it was funny when I found it and there were his three or four posts that he teaches to put on your site and then there was the 'hello world' post.

    Come on - if you're going to use a website as an example for creating a product at least remove the hello world post!

    No offense to the OP, but worrying about other people's "about" pages isn't going to make you a dime. If you choose to focus on such things, your focus isn't on your own business.

    As long as we're on the topic though, use your about page to lead people to your products and pass on a little internal link juice to your product pages. For example:
    XYZ Company was founded in 1997 in Sometown, USA. Our first product was Crayon Widgets, which you can still buy today. Our Widgets are made of the highest quality crayon, and other relevant keywords, in the industry.

    Following the success of our Crayon Widgets we released Concrete Windshield Wipers. These are the first and only windshield wipers with a lifetime guarantee.
    The blue underlined text represents (keyword) links to your products. (Mods, those aren't real links, just colored text for the example.)

    See how that works? Use every opportunity to redirect traffic to your sales pages, and focus on what you can do to grow your business instead of what others are doing wrong in theirs. See you at the top.

    Though a lot of the time the site owner may not have learnt to use WP properly yet (but if they were promoting SEO or other net services I would be concerned).
