How long forum posts hurt your forum marketing...

Sheesh, man. I started off interested in your post Justin, but you lost me by going on and on. Brevity, dude.

This cuts both ways, in all seriousness. If you're always posting drive-by comments, you don't build any authority or a following. I think, as with most things, moderation. Throw in the occasional longer post full of juicy stuff. But not all the time or you will be that guy at the party who's a buzz kill.

A post, much like an article or book or any other form of content, should be as short or as long as required to convey the necessary information.

At a party, is it that "the guy" talks and talks and talks that is the problem or that he is boring or telling you stuff you already know that is the real problem?

There are some people you can listen to all day. They engage you. They keep you interested. They continue to feed you information you want and need.

With other people, you're looking at your watch and thinking of a way to slip away quietly, or to remove yourself from the conversation without being rude.

On a forum, however, it's no big deal. It's not rude to stop reading and skip to another post if the content doesn't interest you.

I disagree with the premise of the post. That is that the way you post might hurt your marketing. To me, forums are a place to gather and discuss the a topic. Any business that comes out of that is a byproduct. So basically, say whatever you want...why worry about the marketing implications?

But I am one of those people that doesn't really read many really long posts. So there are a few posters that just really go on, and on about every topic...they bold, they underline, they use italics. Some things it's necessary, but geez...learn to express yourself in a few less words (for your own sake!)

Dan pretty much said what I was going to say. I would only add that the value of a post is entirely subjective. Your subjectivity works for you, but often isn't relevant to anyone else.

I don't particularly care for long posts, but more like medium-sized ones LOL. It's just my personal tastes. To say that a long post will hurt your forum marketing practices negatively does seem a but premature, as many probably benefit greatly from making long, information filled posts.

It's not about long or short... It's about how you present it IMHO...

Everybody must know one or two people who can attract others (girls usually) by nice story telling. He express his thought by well presented story, and even if you listen him for hours, you won't get bored, or even ask for more...

It's all about how you present it.

Present it wrong way, your short post will look like garbage.

Present it in right way, even if you repeat what others say, with your funny twist, people will love you...

But you are right about people who talk and talk without even knowing what he just said. That is not good.

I think really it depends on what the person is speaking about.

I have been known to write some long responses. Not interested? Then it is not you that is being targeted. so skip it.
Is there an actual point to complaining about how people speak? :confused:

I personally would not read a post if the person was talking through their hat. But. When people who actually have something to say that is going to benefit me paying attention.guess what I read it.
