PayPal membership subscriptions question ...

My wife and I run a successful membership site and fortunately get very low unsubscribe rates. However, each month there are always a certain number of subscriptions that PayPal reports as having 'failed'.

It seems that they try to collect the money again a few days later and if it fails again, they automatically delete the subscription.

While a few of these failures can be traced to subscribers having forgotten to renew their credit card details when their cards expire, the vast majority are more mysterious.

We regularly get people asking why we have thrown them out, and how can they get back in to our site!

In these cases, their credit cards are current and within their balance, their bank accounts are fine and in several cases, customers report that their banks or credit card companies deny having refused the transaction.

PayPal, of course, have nothing of any consequence to say on the matter.

Has anyone else experienced this phenomenon? And do you have any idea why these payments fail - and is there anything that can be done to minimise the problem?

Mostly our customers can eventually rejoin us, but it puts everyone - us and them - to an unnecessary fuss and bother.

    Hi Martin,

I experienced this a few times. I am not sure if it is paypal doing it randomly or if it is an actual case of insufficient funds.
The way to avoid that is to have a seperate payment option people can utilize like maybe 2co or something (not sure if they do recurring bill)

It seems a lot of us membersite owners experience this from time to time usually it is the part of the customer but just in case. here is a tip
a week before payment is due send out a gentle reminder that payment will be deducted on the date it is due. this will help to avoid some issues.
    Cheers

It seems kind of strange that their credit cards/bank accounts etc were all fine.

I would likely call PayPal and keep demanding to speak to someone hire up until I got a reasonable answer.

Even though I've never heard of it happening without insufficient funding being the cause, I'm sure someone at PayPal knows the answer.

It does seem really strange, though. I'm now wondering if all of the "failed" payments I've had have been real or a PayPal error!

Yes, I have had this happen as well. Very mysterious - and then it's quite a pain to reinstate them with the membership software I am using (Memberspring).
