Need a new hosting company

I ran out of storage yesterday and the guys at Valueweb couldn't figure it out. Now I can't upgrade until Monday.
Is there a good hosting company you guys recommend and how do I go about changing hosts? Can it get done today? Would it affect my seo?
How long would I be down?

  • I'd recommend Kiosk.ws or hostgator.com .

These companies are the absolute best.

  • I have a HostGator Reseller's account ($25/mo w/ 300 GB transfer bandwidth and 25 GB storage for unlimited domains) and it works great for me. They have 24/7 live chat support and their staff is VERY well trained.

I believe they offer to switch a few domains over for you for free upon signup, but it only takes a couple minutes to change your nameservers and configure your HostGator WebHost Manager if you did it on your own.

I don't believe SEO will be affected, but you may want to run that by HostGator.

  • I've just added Jumpline to my spectrum of providers. They gave me 3 months for free with a coupon. So far it works great...

  • So you're saying I could call hostgater right now and be up and running in a few hours?
  • Check out ThinkHost ( I use them to host all of my domains ) -- more info in my sig under Web Hosting Rankings
  • I use dreamhost, and (this is an affiliate promo code) if you use FreeWWW4Life as a promo code, they give you a free domain name for life. I pay by the year, about $110.

This is why I like them:
    1. unlimited space and bandwidth
    2. unlimited domains
    3. lots of one click installs (like wordpress, drupal, joomla, phpforum, etc)
    4. they are a green hosting company
    5. I love their support, they always say "well, that's not really what we support, but .. here is your answer.." lol. I always ask them nutty stuff though, like how to fork processes, and edit .htaccess for mod_rewrite ... most users don't ask those types of questions I think.
    6. free shell access (transfer files encrypted instead of by ftp)
    7. new sub domains is a snap
    8. Free logging tools
    9. Virtual server upgrades as your site grows for only $15 a month.
    10. they can have you setup in minutes to hours (though as with all hosting companies, DNS is still an issue)

I'm sure there are other reasons I like them, but I don't remember off the top of my head. I've been using them since Feb 2006, and have tried all the other major ones: Godaddy (which I hate), lunarpages (wasn't too bad, but poor support), liquidweb (my account got hacked), rackspace (couldn't afford it, and service wasn't really as good as they claim), and several other "small shop" ISPs. Dreamhost is my favorite.

As always, with a shared hosting company, you need to go to websense.com and opendns.org and whitelist your site as a "safe" site. Because you are probably on a shared IP with someone who is doing something bad (somewhere, lol).

I think they sell dedicated IP addresses for $4 a month too, a good deal if you have need of such thing.

I would recommend dreamhost even if you don't use my promo code

  • OK I signed up with hostgator. for 14 a month , unlimitted business plan. Put in the request for the transfer.
I'll let you know how it goes.

This really sucks. I lost all my sales from Friday until this gets sorted out.

    • I'm sure you will be happy with Hostgator. I asked a technical support question yesterday at 9.00am UK time, middle of the night their time, and got a reply in 30 minutes.
  • Are you still looking for help or have you solved the problem
    Emailrevealer?

  • Hi Emailrevealer,

I give 2 thumbs-up to hostgator as they did a good job ! The team not only help me to restored my files, they also help to fix my wordpress blog errors.

You may learn a thing or two from my experience. Read my experience which I posted back in August 2008 in my blog.

  • try going for one of the standard hosting companies in the US they are generally good.
try researching them on your own and evaluate what you need and how much space do they give you and how much do you require.
as far as transferring from your current host to a new one is,its pretty simple just point your domains to the new website hosting companies Name servers.
ask support how to do it,they generally help in these kinds of matter
however if you need a little briefing how to do it,then here it is.

    Transferring Name Servers

    1. Go to the control pannel of your Domain registrar(who ever it may be)

2.then there must be on option called Domains, click on it.

3.After your done doing that, click on name servers.

4.there must be an option called Primary Name Server Name-put the primary name server of the hosting company(your new hosting company)

5.there must be an option called secondry Name Server Name-put the secondry name server of the hosting company(your new hosting company)

6.After that fill in the Primary Name Server IP Address-(obtain the numbers from your hosting company)

7.Then fill in the Secondary Name Server IP Address-(Again get the numbers for your new host)

    And there it is,your done.
contact your new hosting company and ask them about the numbers that are required, they should oblige,
    Hope this helped you.

    regards.
  • I use YRhost.com for some of my sites. They're very cheap and reliable (Linux hosting 50 GB disk space $5/month or $50/year). I also have a VPS with interhost.co.uk. Their VPS prices start at £18.99 p/m (around $30 USD) and I've been very happy with them.

  • I have tried Kiosk.ws twice now - and am in the process of moving everything again. I host across 4 companies but this was the only one that I had a full WHM/reseller acct. My sites have been down 4 times this week that I KNOW of - and while you did get a fairly fast response time - the responses are generally useless - they rarely say anything more than "sorry for the inconvenience. sites should be up now."

That is NOT an acceptable response! Sorry - but I would advise against Kiosk.ws in a big way.

I went back the second time because of the HotConference product but that's not worth risking my websites - and I know many others (with more sites than me!) that feel the same way.

And if anyone can recommend a good reseller other than HG - I am still in the decision making process!

    • All I can say is that since Kiosk has moved to Houston, I have had a very, very little downtime. I have 7 sites with them, not a reseller account. I use their downtime witness and a custom program on my pc that tracks the up/down time for each site in realtime. I wonder if the reseller packages had a problem. I know they were testing the new hotconference program and their new video producer product this month.
  • I've never had a problem with hostgator.
  • I've had several problems this week with Kiosk, but never had any issues with Hostgator.

I have a support ticket in with Kiosk right now because something doesn't look right with my reseller account. I'm not really that impressed with them, quite honestly. I've used Hostnine, 1and1, Fasthosts and a small place called UK2 in the past, but Kiosk and Hostnine are not as smooth an experience as Hostgator, I have to say.

  • I've been using Hostgator too and have never had any problems.
