Update Plug-in Via FTP Help??

I have a new version of a plug-in on my computer in a zip format. I need to FTP (I use filezilla) this update, and overwrite the existing files.
I logged into ftp, got to the site, wp-contents, plug-ins, to the correct one.
So, I initially transferred over the entire zipped file right over this plug-in, and it added the new file name to the plug-in, but did not update it.
I deleted that.

I thought I should have upzipped it first, so I did so, and then transferred the whole unzipped file (not each piece) right over the existing plug-in.

Still, no luck, the file is not updating in my wordpress dashboard, I am still on the old version.

Am I missing something here?

Why not just install it from your dashboard? Delete the old version, then install the new one.

I prefer to first deactivate the old version and then delete the files. Do this from the plugins page in WP-Admin. I generally just use the upload feature from the Add New under Plugins and browse to the zipped file.
If using ftp, I unzip the zipped plugin first. Check to make sure that there is only one plugin folder (i.e. pluginfolder>files NOT pluginfolder>pluginfolder>files), then upload.
