  • Google will only close you down if you violate their terms of service. You can have 0% ctr for years and not get banned.

    • As far as I know they may stop running the ads if they CTR is that low, but you won't get banned.

Back before the IPO that sent Google over to the dark side, they would disable ads, keywords and even campaigns if the CTR was less than 0.5%. The reasoning behind the practice was that if you couldn't get one in two hundred people to click your ad, it was not of interest to the users.

About the time GOOG came to be, they stopped disabling ads for low CTR. Instead, they jacked up the minimum bid necessary to keep the ad active. That was the first Google Slap - people that were used to running branding campaigns or marginal campaigns at a nickel a click suddenly found themselves with click prices of $5-$10 to keep their ads active.

The second Google Slap came when they found that users didn't appreciate being promised information and being directed to squeeze pages. The response was the same - $5-$15 minimum bids.

Now, they've gone a step further and started closing accounts if they don't approve of the pages you want to direct traffic to.

I'm not sure it helps, but I hope you at least found the history lesson interesting...
