Shouldn't I be seeing more traffic to my site?

My site has finally moved up in the SERPS and is now in the #15 spot on Google. The keyword I am ranking for at #15 gets 5,400 local searches a month.

Shouldn't I be seeing more traffic to my site by now?

Of course, I am still building links to get to the first page of google and hopefully within the top 5 spots.

But I just thought I should be seeing more than 1 or 2 visitors per day by now. Also, these visitors are mostly coming from referral sites and not from Google searches.

Hate to be the bad news bear, but I have sites where I'm on the second page for Google results pages and these keywords get in the 100's of thousands or millions of searches per month and all I get is a small handful of traffic from these keywords.

You need to be on the first page and in the top 3 spots to get good traffic from Google search results.

Just giving it to you straight.

Thanks for giving it to me straight. I will keep on building links until I make it in the top 3 spots ( or damn close).

The sad truth is at #15 for 5,400 local searches you're not going to see much traffic. It's page one or bust.

Yup in reality the number one spot takes up ~75% of all the searches and the next two take up the rest. Everything else just gets trickle traffic

    • Yup top 10 is where its all at. Think about it, how often do you go looking for sites on page 2? Maybe you do, but I doubt many people do. People want info and the want it fast. Top 10 gives them quick access. Give it time though, you will eventually break onto the first page.
I've just got my latest site onto page 2. I know I'm only a few weeks away from top 10...it's the best rush you can get.

You'll see a boost at #11, top of page 2. After that it drops back down until you hit #3 which is where you start getting a better percentage of hits.

How else are you getting traffic without SEO? I was under the impression that using SEO is the way to go for longevity.

At first, it is all extremely overwhelming and requires serious study and work. If it were too easy the money would dry up due to over saturation.

But if you stick with it and get some tools to help reduce your workload, develop some ways of working that make sense, you can make this work.

Take the pressure of getting results off your shoulders and start to focus on learning all you can. Each site you launch is a little SEO experiment that will add new skills to your arsenal.

Hang in there, do some more link building and build some other websites.

Well, the only manual stuff I did with this particular site was add the content (the article was outsourced) to my wordpress site, social bookmark it to a couple of sites, and create forum profiles via Angela's backlinks (I'm not done with this month's links yet, though).

The rest has been a free trial of Link Juicer that has been getting my site at least 20 links a day. Then I just go back and ping the links that link juicer created for me.

So, it has not been a major pain as if I was doing everything manually.

I have a few other sites live, but wanted to focus on one and get it to where I wanted, then go back and repeat those processes with those other sites.

By staying over 2nd page of Google, you can't expect traffic when there are only 5400 searches. Build more back links to come up on first page.

Yes, as others have stated - you need to get on the top 5 I would say - some sites I have do very well at position 9, so yes the first page is KEY on Google!

When you say 5,400 a month, are these broad match searches or exact match searches? If you are using the Google keyword tool you should always check out the exact match search volume because that is going to be much closer to reality. Regardless, here are my suggestions:

    1. Try and get some backlinks that have more weight such as .edu backlinks. They seem to be all the rage at the moment. I think there are even people selling .edu baclink packages in the WSO section of this very forum for next to nothing. Also, don't get too impatient and start overdoing the link building - it will hinder your performance rather than help. Try and make it look as natural as possible.

    2. When building links to your site, don't just rely on things like social bookmarking and profile links. The only real benefit you will get from these links is in helping your main site climb slowly up the search results. However if you spend some time doing some article marketing and video marketing, not only will you be building backlinks to your site, you will also be creating little traffic funnels that can potentially start bringing you small amounts of traffic within hours - and for many years to come.

    3. Try and get some traffic to your site... NOW. It's no secret that Google now uses traffic as a factor in website rankings. I have seen it happen to my own sites several times. Get a facebook fan page going, send some ppc, whatever. Just get some traffic going to your site on a regular basis and make sure you have Google Analytics installed so Google knows about it. It's common sense. Sites that start getting an increase in unique traffic on a regular basis will start moving up the search engines.

You need to continue building scam free links so that you can get that much needed traffic to your website.

Yes. The search results were 5400 exact match searches. I will keep working on my backlinks to hopefully make it to the first page of google.

My site is in the #5 spot on Yahoo and Bing though. I guess that is where those 2 visitors a day are coming from.

I will keep working on getting to the first page of google and then hopefully I will start to see more traffic.

Lol, page 2 doesn't mean much to be honest. When you're ranked #6 or higher then the visitors will come in (unless you have a crappy title).

I have a website ranked #6 for 210k hits per month, and guess what I only get 300 visitors a day.

    5400 searches

    Position #1: 2268
    #2: 648
    #3: 432
    #4: 324
    #5: 265
    #6: 216
    #7: 183.6
    #8: 162
    #9: 153.9
    #10: 161.46
    Page 2 All Searches: 540
I would guess the breakdown is similar to the first page so search ranking 15 would be around: 21

Thats why. These of course are just guesstimates not taking into account PPC, local search etc and based purely on organic.

Incidentally that breakdown is also a good way of outlining to SEO clients the value of your SEO work and how much they should be willing to pay your for a keyword.

To be perfectly honest, #15 for that number of searches is not going to bring you that much traffic. You will need to get on Page 1 of google and I would say in the top five on Page 1.Hope that helps.

Only 1-2% of searchers goes to the second page. Try to move to the first page
