I want to build an opt-in list...

Hello everyone,

I want to build an opt-in list and wanted to know if this would work.

I would offer the chance, on a monthly basis, for each subscriber to recieve
a product for just being on my list.

Example - If I was building a list for cosmetics, I would give away a makeup kit to
someone on that list each month.

Am I way off base here?

Thanks,

Tommy

    It's a good idea.

The problem, however, is that, although you may get many sign-ups, those sign-ups probably won't be very responsive. It's always better to offer something of value for free, first. Then build your relationship.

Have you thought of expenses to send a gift to everyone?

You can run a raffle twice a month.

Concentrate on your community/town/state first. Local people are more responsive. Print your web site url on your cards and ask the people to sign up at your site for your list.

Not only you should give them gifts, you should get something in return from your list too. So try to JV with cosmetics dealers to send discount codes to your list and you will get a percentage of it.

    Hi Tommy,

When you do sampling. its probably best to focus on your most valuable clients/subscribers. These would include previous customers who bought something from you.

Next in line is free-signup subscribers - typically their monetary spent is not high. From past experience, it's a waste of money to "shower them with gifts" (so as to speak) without you qualifying them first.

When you go digital (with products that is), then it doesn't cost you money to send your list valuable information.

But sending people just freebies won't allow you to "cultivate" your list to buy from you... they'll only expect handouts.

This is my experience. There are exceptions, though... but the more focused or niched your list, the better your chances of success.

    Hope this helps!

Heres what I will do - i will have a contest for my fitness/bodybuilding list

I'm pissed off with people signing up but not confirming. So i will make them fill a TAF form and give me at least 3 genuine leads - then those leads must do the same, etc

No leads - no chance of winning the prize.

I will make it a genuine expensive prize that they will all want and will advertise, buy coreg etc.

    Hey man,

That's a great idea, but here's a little twist you can do...

Give out a free ebook at the end of every month and make sure that the subject of the ebook is the same as a product promotion you will be conducting to your list that way it gives the "juice" they need to really get interested in this subject.

So example give out a little report about PPC and then a few days later hype them up and tell them that you have something cool that you will be showing them, a few days later follow up with product or service promotion under your affiliate link.

Hope this helps you out my man!

    Best Regards,

You really need to work out the return on investment, look at your costs versus potential revenue.

That was an expensive way of building list. I'm not telling it is bad, it is expensive but if you see a potential and you have money to invest then why not. You yourself can tell if the possible market is good or not by testing it. Test it first, build the relationship and check your expenses. You can also a apply a contest. There are lot of ways to build list, read the list building 101 at Maling List Building Books, Reports and Scripts, it's free.

Jay Abraham once gave away full commission (up to $3 - 3.45) to businesses who promoted Bengay. He did this after finding out every customer who bought Bengay once on average would purchase so many times more. He obtained large mailing lists through the help of these businesses.

It worked for him because he only gave commissions to sales.

If you give out digital product instead of physical product, that strategy will work for you. But for physical product, it'll all depend on what kind of return you'll receive every time you give away your gift.

Why don't you come up with something digital?

    Tommy,

I think a once a month prize will work out. Just make sure it isn't too expensive of a gift. It will work because they are throwing in their email for a chance to win a prize. However, it could backfire also as these people on the list are just there for the freebies and nothing else.

If that doesn't work, then just throw in a free report like,"10 ways to look younger" if you are selling some skin cream.

Great Idea...I am also working out something VERY similar in my niche. The kicker is that you have to have a niche that keeps buying. If it a one time deal, they may hold off on purchasing until they see if they win the giveaway. I am in a niche with physical products, products that those in the niche keep using and buying, so giving away something is no big deal.

Does it attract people who just want a shot at a free gift? Sure. Throw a tell a friend script in there and have them refer similar people interested in that niche and you are bound to get some really good leads.

The way I am doing it is I am creating a newsletter with promos/tips, etc. and all that are on the newsletter are entered into the monthly drawing. Be sure when you announce the winner you have their name, pic, city, state (if they allow it) to show people that you are truly giving something away- show social proof (and do it... get a few people talking about what they got for being on your list and people will want to get on it).

Good luck- I would be interested to see how this works on your list.

        Hello all,

I really appreciate everyone who responded to the thread.

You all had some great insight into this and now I can formulate a plan.

I was just curious in how this would work out and to see if anyone had tried this with physical products. You know, there are companies giving away free products and trials all the time. It must work if done correctly.

I figured why not give away a good product to someone on my list once a month and then market other products and services to them. Of course, if they don't ever buy anything, then they would be disqualified from ever getting anything.

I will give it a go.

        Thanks again everyone.
