The most simple way to have a sales page is take a free PLR one and to modify it, to your taste.

To find successful pages, either search the niche you are targeting or hot niches (weight loss, payday loans, viagra) (as a general rule of thumb, anything that is advertising on adwords is going to be profitable otherwise it's not going to last too long).

Don't just copy and paste their sales pages, but try to find similarities between two or three different ones. Then split test like crazy.

Here's my 2 cent... when I start learning about copy, here's what I found.

Basic of sales page is this:
A: Attention --> Hook or Headline
I: Interest --> Tell story to relate your offer to your reader
D: Desire --> State your offer and the benefits if they have your product.
A: Action --> Call to action like order form and scarcity to make them order your product now.

It's not going to make your sales letter the best sales copy in the world, but it should convert at 1% at least. And that is better than not setup sales copy and have 0% conversion.

    Hope this help...

    Two things...

First - If you're interested in writing your own sales letters, buy the book "ultimate sales letters" by Dan Kennedy. You'll learn a ton and be able to craft a pretty decent sales letter for not being a professional copywriter.

Second - Depending on what you need it for, it's probably money well spent to have one written for you. It's kinda pricey, but a good sales page is key to conversion. So if you have a sound traffic strategy, then it's probably money well spent.

Well I've been doing this awhile now so I've actually spent some money on things that make setting up a blog, whether for opt-in, sales, squeeze, membership, etc, much easier.

So my tool chest is: OptimizedPress, FlexxProfessional, FlexSqueeze, WishList, and SalesSqueeze. Those are the main ones I use for different projects.

Doing it manually was for when I was a newbie and HAD to do all the work manually. Not so now.
