I may have discovered the Internet Marketing "God Particle"

Hi folks,

I've been doing a lot of deep thinking lately (fueled by gallons of coffee, the occasional quart of rum and once even a substance that the Native American Indians used to achieve higher levels of consciousness ;-)) and I believe I may have discovered the reason why so many Internet marketers have so much trouble making money.

It's a theory, so I'm not going to sell it, but if there's any interest in it I'll whip up a little PDF for y'all and stick it in the War Room here on the forum as a free download.

I used the phrase "God Particle" in the title of this post because it refers to the Higgs Bosen - a theoretical particle that those dummies working on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) over in Geneva (CERN) are looking for. It's supposedly the particle that gives everything mass and fills in the holes - the glue that holds everything together.

Well, my theory is much the same except it deals with marketing - it's the bit of info that most marketers are missing and continuously eludes them.

Ok, enough geekiness.

Y'all want me to whip it up for you into a no strings attached free download that'll remain in the War Room for all time?

Paul

Disclaimer: Calling the people working at the LHC "dummies" was a joke.

If ever you can find it repeated on TV over there, on YouTube or anywhere else, there's a wonderful episode of the BBC's topical news quiz called "Have I Got News For You?" in which Paul Merton's catchphrase was "Down the collider" (as in "I'm just going down the collider") in which the Higgs Boson particle featured quite strongly). Recommended.

I love "Have I Got News For You".

        Hi Paul,

Actually, I have something quite different in mind. Sorry.
In that case I too look forward to seeing what you have up your sleeve.

Cheap aftershave makes good emergency anti-freeze for vehicle engines, I believe.

        Hope that helps

Cheap aftershave appeals to certain markets, and no market should be ignored.

And you mentioned your illegal partakings. It doesn't bother ME but the other day I said "goddamit" in a thread title and allegedly got brow beaten for "using the lord's name in vain".

Native American "conscious elevators", caffeine, booze. Man this is starting to sound familiar.

What was that guy's name again 6 letters

Can I be a part of your cult too, I need a leader.

            I had to leave AA.

Do you believe they don't let you drink there. I told them "well, if your gonna tie my hands", I gotta go.

This I have to read, so I'm in.

I figured out the meaning of life on a conscious enhancing substance too.

Only problem, when I came down

            I forgot.

I like deep thinking and it was ten years ago that I wrote two e-books on ancient philosophy, relativity, quantum physics, new age, and postmodernism. I uploaded it for free reading and download. One of those e-books freely hover on the web. Its title is "The Three Unanswerable Basic Questions." Some have even sold it at amazon as kindle while others sold it at ebay with other famous e-books in a CD. That is the time when internet marketing came to my mind...

Well, I just submitted a post in the war Room and the report will be available there as soon as a mod approves it.

For anyone wishing to get it earlier or not a war room member, just take a little look around and you just may find it.

It's not much and now that I see it I probably could/should have just posted it here as text on the forum, so if you're expecting something huge, I hope you're not disappointed.

Thanks for motivating me to write it up everyone. I hope you get something out of it

FYI, it's spelled Higgs Boson and Fermilab, not CERN is very close to reaching the energy levels necessary to see it, albeit unsuccessful thus far. CERN is still struggling to get itself up to full speed, but hopefully soon.......on a side note, nice solid report. Much thanks.

Paul - I think that was an excellent report. I enjoyed it greatly.

I've written about this topic before, but probably not as effectively. When we hang out here, talking strategy and technique and marketing in general, it's easy to drift away from "the God particle" (don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't read the report) a little bit at a time. This was a good reminder of what's important.

    Thanks.

        Hi Paul,

Thanks for the report, it was interesting.

I have some feedback for you

I'd like to go a little deeper on the subject. Regarding the human aspect, I find that there are two sides to it. Personally, I approach my business in this (the 'human') way by default - in some ways that's positive, but in others it's the opposite.

The positive side is that my clients usually become my friends and business and pleasure always become intertwined in a positive way. I enjoy my work because it's not just about profiting and of course, (as you pointed out) it's a lot easier to solve the problems of your prospects when you view them as human beings rather than just a number on a list.

The negative side is that in some ways and some circumstances, it can be a hindrance when you focus too much on the human aspect of business.

A few years ago I asked someone on the forum to recommend to me a book about the 'tougher' aspects of business. The book they recommended was 'Thick Face, Black Heart' by Chin Ning Chu (the quotes in my sig are all from it.)

It's by someone who has a blend of business experience from both the Asian (China) market as well as the USA market. They take an old Chinese concept and explain it in a way designed to assist Westerners to understand the Asian way. It deals with aspects of this issue that I am presenting.

I can think of many businesses where certain jobs within that business (particularly those at the higher levels of decision making) require an almost dehumanised approach to them, once certain moral/ethical prerequisites are dealt with and put on one side.

Just as an example, from what I have seen on TV, a typical hedge fund or stock trading company would reject someone with the human orientated approach and actively seek people who can shut off emotional, ethical and environmental thoughts which will distract them from completing the business task at hand, as professionally as possible.

In marketing, you would want a copywriter who can empathise and who has a deep understanding of human psychology as well as hard-selling ability. But if you have someone who is a number cruncher - who analyses test results in order to make difficult decisions in terms of marketing, industrial engineering or pricing you might actually find that someone with a more human orientated approach would be hindered by it.

Do you want your marketing analyst to make decisions to improve bottom line, or to minimise refunds/complaints and boost customer satisfaction?

Do you want your industrial engineer to focus on minimising unnecessary wastage or to keep 'Bob' in a job because he's a nice bloke?

Do you want to price a product to please the customers or maximise ROI?

In all honesty, I think the ideal marketer is someone who can confidently, accurately and professionally switch between hard-nosed business person who deals with numbers like ROI and retention rates and make difficult decisions confidently with an uncluttered mind, and conversely switch to using the more human orientated approach when it comes to communicating with prospects and customers.

Therefore I'm not convinced that you have presented the IM 'God Particle.'

I think that this is an important aspect of IM. I think it's also one where many IMers have some difficulty.

But considering your assertion that this is -

the reason why so many Internet marketers have so much trouble making money.
..I don't think it is. And if it is, then I think it's more important that marketers appreciate and master both the human aspect as well as and in tandem with the absolute opposite.

If we were to judge things purely on a financial scale, then I would have to say currently that psychopaths who see prospects purely as numbers are actually more likely to make more money in IM than those who see the human aspect of their market by default.

I think this is also mirrored outside of IM in the bigger picture, not least because many huge companies are operating in virtual monopoly conditions - in which case from a business and profit point of view, caring is financial suicide and the exact opposite is the typical approach adopted by companies that make billions.

If someone asked me the best way to approach their IM business (broadly, not just from a pure profit point of view) I would advise them to take the human approach. But I would also warn them that this comes at a price in terms of effort and overall profit, but reaps many rewards beyond the financial aspect.

In summary - If you were so inclined, I would be interested to hear your opinion and further explanation of what exactly makes you feel that this is the IM 'God particle'.

I think it's an important point you make and currently it's a great way to 'zig' while everyone else lazily 'zags'.

But I'm not convinced that it's causing as many issues as suggested, in terms of it being the IM God particle and causing marketers to have trouble making money. I'm interested in your response, but also don't want to detract from or sound unappreciative of the effort you have applied in creating this interesting, thought-provoking thread and report.

            Hi Roaddog,

            Thanks for the props

It is hard to have both yin and yang at the same.
            Why?

I'm not an expert, but to me the very concept of yin and yang is that they co-exist - when one pushes, the other concedes, but this action forces the opposite to occur simultaneously elsewhere.

When light 'pushes' the darkness away in the morning in the UK, the darkness 'pushes' the light away simultaneously in the evening in New Zealand.

In my opinion, the ultimate goal is to have everything as close to a perfect balance as possible. Absence makes the heart grow fonder but familiarity breeds contempt. A real man must destroy threats to the family, but also be able to gently cradle the newborn.

Ideally in business (and life) we should be able to close deals agressively to our advantage, compromise and also give freely - at just the right times.

          Roger,

I can set up a business, a site, an autoresponder, load it all up with content and offers, do all the google trickery, get links, buy courses, WSOs, etc., but without people taking action, I don't make money, and there is no ROI to think about maximizing.

There is no way to gauge the success of the sales copy my copywriter wrote if s/he can't get the first published draft to attract at least 1 or more people to buy.

Without people, you wouldn't have any clients and you wouldn't know whether you're focusing too much or not enough on the human aspect.

Marketers have no way to focus on both the human and hardcore business aspect if no humans are buying.

You make a lot of great points, but those points are coming from the assumption that those marketers and business people already have measurable sales, that come from people. Somehow, in some way, they were able to attract those people.

Without the people, there's nothing to balance out. There's no one to fill in the holes. And if marketers don't think of that aspect of running a business or trying to make money...

That's where I'm coming from with the report.

Roger, great point. It's not so much a 'conflict' as a 'balancing act'.

I'll give you an analogy from my medical practice.

When I meet with the family of a child who is going to have surgery,
I am intensely aware of the 'human' issues, while talking to parents,
hearing their story, seeing the emotion, pain and fear in their eyes
as they prepare to face a challenging period ahead.

But inside the operating room, while these emotions no doubt remain,
the focus of our entire team is upon the surgery itself. In a sense,
you could call it 'de-humanizing' the experience, though in reality it
is an intensification of it while putting those feelings 'on hold' as
skill, expertise and experience come into play to perform a delicate
          and complex task.

One without the other would make the overall experience less rich and
          meaningful, imho.

A real professional can place things 'on hold' at will, to focus on
things that have to be done more dispassionately and impersonally.
That, however, doesn't make things less 'human'... indeed more so.

The flip side of 'tuning out' the humanity on the other end so that
one may perform one's chores more efficiently creates automatons and
robots who, though they may be brilliantly effective at what they do,
are often less fulfilled or satisfied on a deeper plane by the fruits
          of their dubious "success".

Thanks for the nice post, Roger. It expands upon Paul's excellent
          message.
