Hello Everyone,

Is there a certain size and type of font that you think works better when writing online sales letters? I'm curious what font you recommend for headlines, sub heads, and the body of the letter.

Thanks!

RJ

Personally I prefer Trebuchet MS, more of the web 2.0 look...

It's nice to look at something different... compared to the traditional fonts, arial, verdana, tahoma, man... after a while everything looks the same... it's nice to change it up a bit...

Some of the other fonts I like are Georgia, and the others that look like that...

Don't listen to... "well I have read somewhere that someone tested this and 'x' is THE BEST font to use..." don't believe them and think for yourself... what looks good to you and choose the type of font that fits best with your audience.

    Hi Ryan
Keep the font styles in the same 'family' example,
don't use a times new roman with arial.

I think more can be done with the proper color schemes than with using loads of font styles. This is tahoma, nice readable font, This is trebuchet, the spacing is wider between the letters and I personally think harder on the eye.

so avoid mixing fonts that are 'serif' fonts, meaning they have little tails and things on the letters like this with letters that don't have them aka sans serif like this one

Yes, in fact from all of the tests I've done most markets respond to different fonts differently. There's no one "use this font here" method to follow because of that. It's actually one of the first things we test in a new market.

Two of the fonts which I use regularly when writing for my clients are: Tahoma and Georgia.

I also sometimes use Times New Roman.

You can't go too far wrong with any of these three fonts although some of them are more popular in different markets.

If I was to recommend, as a good rule of thumb, just one solid font to stick with I'd say go with Tahoma.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks,
    Kenneth

Either Arial, Tahoma or Verdana works fine for me. Clean and neat look

Writing an entire sales page in Comic Sans MS is a bad idea. Even if you are trying to sell a 'fun' product, use it very sparingly.

    However, the key is this...
    • DON'T get hung up on the font.
    • DO make sure it's easy to read.
    • DO focus on your sales message.
Impress them with your sales pitch, not with your choice of font.

    All the best,

    Michael

Many copywriting books provide you with instruction and explanations about which size and style of font works best for sales letters. Authors have their reasons for choosing the one they prefer to use. If you have a favorite copywriter, see what his/her ideas are regarding font. I believe you will get a different answer for everyone here.

I prefer a serif font for my body. Size varies.

    RJ;

Michael is right copy, copy, copy is the important thing to remember.

But to answer your question...copy sales letters that you know are successful and they test small changes until you find the one that is your control piece.

It's all about your offer... not your font.

Make your sales letter easy to read. That's
    all you have to do.

      Marc,
      It's all about your offer...
      Bravo.

A rough list of the elements to test, in order of their importance and impact on sales, might be:

Offer & Prospect (These have to be considered at the same time.)
      Headline
      Copy
      Order process
      Layout
Individual visual elements (Graphics, fonts, etc)

There are other things you could fit into the list, but this will give an approximate idea of what you need to work on first. Unless you do something ridiculous that screws things up badly (like doing the whole letter in Comic Sans MS, or using purple type on a lime green background), this is where the money is.

That said, the choice of font can make a noticeable difference, based more on the type of reading your market generally does than on any other factor. Everything affects everything else.

The right offer presented to the right prospects is 90% of the game, as far as getting into profits. The rest is tweaking for maximum visitor value.
