Question for Article Writers (Outsourcing)

How do you handle writing articles for niches that you have no personal knowledge about, and still come up with a decent article?

What if I wanted 5-10 articles outsourced about "police database management" or some other similar very narrowly focused niche?

Is the research to get yourself up to speed enough to write a decent article included in the pricing usually, or would article writers have a cow when they saw the niche targeted?

I'm considering outsourcing some article work because I ain't no writer , and I can't imagine trying to research some obscure topic enough to write a decent article.

I once had a similar situation. I was writing 20 articles for a client all built around the same keyword phrase for his blog. His niche was a very specific insurance type that I'd never heard of.

The first thing I did was had him suggest topics. I wanted to be sure I was writing both from the perspective he wanted and with the proper pro/con stance (Heh. It's amazing how often I'll look at something and say, "That's just stupid!", but that's exactly what the client wants written). Knowing this avoids pissing your client off, like in your 'Police Database Management' example:If you're marketing your services to police depts., my article on how to manage police databases to document how police abuse their power won't help you a lot.

If you pick a decent writer, just providing suggested titles should be enough:
How proper police database management increases officer effectiveness
Police database management - dragging your department into the 21st century
And so on and so on.

If your information is so obscure and specific that this won't be enough, I'd suggest writing what points you want to get across: In article 1, I want to stress that adopting X database program decreased the time required to complete the speeding ticketing process in Arizona by 15%. Something like that.

Now, If you're looking at an obscure, specific topic that you don't know anything about either, then you're probably stuck getting an industry insider to write at least the rough drafts for your articles (and paying out the ass for them).

    Good luck

I write for clients and have had some of the strangest requests, but with a little research and willpower you can research any topic easily enough to come up with articles. A good writer typically inquires what niche you are seeking articles on or will advise if they cannot write on your niche, and no we don't "have a cow", and research is included in price. (And if you are seeking I write articles for 5 cents a word, no topic too difficult or obscure (trust me I have written some pretty odd niche articles.)

I research the topic - usually the client is generous enough to provide multiple links where I can pull ideas and content in order to make a complete article, or 10. Some don't, and that's when I go on my own treasure hunt.

It's always best to provide as much information as possible to an article writer because for those of us who don't use PLR, it really does take up a bit of time.

If the subject of the articles is really foreign to me, I make sure to clarify as much as I can with the customer about what he or she wants. If the customer wants me to write five articles on home schooling, I can come up with them quite easily because this subject isn't unfamiliar to me. If, however, the client wants five articles about growing cultured black pearls in Costa Rica, then I'm going to clarify as much as possible with the client and then do some heavy research.

One of the things I actually like about this is that with a lot of the articles I write, I not only get paid for them, but I learn new things as well. Since I love to learn, I consider this a wonderful perk.

You writers amaze me. I love to read...love to learn/research...and can have an intelligent discussion about almost any topic under the sun...but I dislike (not hate) writing. Maybe one day I'll grow to enjoy it, but for now I'd rather pay someone else to do what they do well.

That's just one of the great things about WF. Different people, with different likes/dislikes and abilities all in one place.

When I work as an article writer I will take assignments on any topic, even if I know very little about that topic at the time and the assignment will take me longer to complete. Why do I do this? I do it for a number of reasons; 1. I still want the money for the job 2. I learn in the process so future assignments become easier and 3. I just love learning, I enjoy learning about pretty much anything from property in Brazil to Finnish silver jewelery to midwifery.

This knowledge that you learn not only helps me in my writing business but I always find myself using what I researched in other aspects too like in my own IM ventures.
