How is creativity helping you in your business and marketing?

Hi folks,

Had a very interesting PM discussion with an awesomely great thinker earlier and it inspired me to ask you all this question:

How is creativity helping you in your business and marketing?

My own thoughts:

Just looking at some of the questions being asked here on the forum, coupled with how successful the products that claim to hold your hand and drag you step-by-step seem to be, IMO, indicates that there's a lack of creativity in our industry from the get-go. My opinion is further supported by the product of that step-by-step hand holding when I see massive amounts of spam in search engines, people copying other's sites and methods without understanding why those sites are successful in the first place, etc.

But the truly successful people who float to the top of niches always seem to have a creative streak, in how they market and present their products and public image, at least.

Myself - I've always seemed to do a lot better when I add creativity to the mix. I've been able to set myself apart from most by doing my own thing rather than doing what everyone else is doing.

Thoughts?

Paul

Creativity in any business makes all the difference in the world. Some people have it, some don't.

A non-creative person can still make money online, but they will only go so far. They can follow a proven formula to selling a product or service, but if they lack the chutzpah to market outside of the box, then they will reach a point where they cannot surpass their competition.

Creativity along with charisma, charm, and personality are key ingredients for successful marketing. Not all people have these traits. Recognizing that you lack these G-d given gifts is the first step. The next would be to hire or partner with somebody that does.

Excellent observations in your reply, Brian, and I would love to discuss the pros and cons of your last sentence quoted above, but it definitely warrants it's own thread.

      Thanks for the insightful input.

It seems that IM has been set up so that people can make money off of people who don't need to think for themselves. The step by step methods hold no creativity whatsoever and I would say a lot of people don't really care as long as they are lining their pockets. It's actually kind of sad because I think coming up with fresh stuff is awesome, but most people don't care about the creative aspect as long as they see the "green."

I think if people learn how to do things without necessarily following a "step by step" plan, they would have to be more creative in what they do because they have to actually think. Just my opinion.

    I totally agree Paul.

The problem is, most people are conditioned to be told, rather than to lead. They want the easy life... the proven solution. They think that one simple loophole or new plugin will be the answer.

They follow the same sales letter template... the same site layout... the same pricing structure... promote the same offers...

Not because they know it works, but because they're told to do it.

It feels good to be told what to do. Humans instinctively follow a leader. And if there's no boss around, then this guy with his gazillion dollar WSO is the next best thing to show me the way.

Marketing is all about creativity. If you can't angle yourself differently to the growing competition, then you'll go un-noticed, and un-rich.

You bring up a good point there. I also see where being forced to be more creative might, in and of itself, eliminate a lot of people out of the market, both as marketers and customers.

    @Nick, agreed on all points.
