Email Addresses are the SAME as Cash... read for explanation

We all do it. We use the phrases "Free eBook" or "Free WSO", but the reality of it is that these offers are not free.

The definition of a transaction is one party giving something of value to another party for something of value. In most cases, the exchange is even. You give a guy ten bucks for ten bucks worth of oranges or tomatoes. An email address is the same thing as accepting money from somebody. If you don't believe me, then check some past court cases. Many judges have ruled this to be the case.

Having said this, you should think of the people on your mailing list as customers, whether they have given you money or not. They have provided you with something of value and you should do the same in return.

Put some thought into what you send out as your enticement offer. After all, people are PAYING YOU for it! Also, this is the product that they will judge you on. You only have one shot at that first impression.

When you are accepting money, you make it a point to offer your customer value for his money. Don't you think that the same frame of mind should be used when accepting an email address?

  • The truth is it is an exchange E.

I actually perceive the value of an email address who buys as being more valuable than if they just bought a product. the potential to have that customer repeat business with you is exponential in comparison to a straight transaction. Why?
Relationship. They trust me. They come to know what I recommend is worthy of being recommended. A customer who just purchases something may or may not buy again. there is no relationship except customer/provider

I lost my entire list recently I was silly and hosted my own AR webhost did a major update and script did not function anymore. Lost the list. Unfortunate because they were with me for over a yr and a half. Here's why: I look at people as being in need of value and in need of competent training.New ideas or different strategies.

Affiliate offers shoved down their throat, crap products recommended and looking at them as atm machines is what leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
So I don't treat them that way. In turn they respond.
Value it really is what's for dinner

    • With all the 'throw-away' email addys being used these days shouldn't we also have some throw away material to give out as equal value?

Or is that not what you were thinking when you were talking about 'the same frame of mind'?

  • It's the word "gift" that is misused. How often are you annoyed with an email headed up "A gift for you" and the link takes you to one of their mates who are offering something in exchange for your email address? Too often?
A "gift" should cost nothing... not even an email address.
Why not be upfront? "There's a great (niche) eBook available at......". Then take the time to "sell" the book and perhaps the author. By the time they get to the signup page, they'll most likely be presold because you've already built up their trust your recommendations.
  • That's odd... I wonder if I could buy this weeks groceries with email address?

Next time I hit Costco I'll ask. For now it's my understanding they only take AE, Debit Cards and Cash.

    • You seem to have missed the point about getting something of value when receiving an email address. You can't use your diamond ring to buy groceries either, but it still has value. And you can use it to buy other products, just ask any pawn shop owner.

Email addresses are tools needed for IMers to achieve success. It's no different than how money is the tool needed for a professional poker player. We both use these tools to generate income.

If your IM business were ever sued for whatever reason, you can bet that the court would see any email addresses in exchange for a product as a monetary transaction.
  • I've tried just blasting garbage out to my list before- definitely didn't work.

Granted, I know some guys make money doing it if they have millions of emails...

But for the most part, seems like the money is all in having a relationship.

What's that mean? Not sending your customers garbage :-p
