Please Help: Re Creating PDFs with clickable links in Open Office -- need Detailed Instructions

Hello Fellow Warrior,

This is really embarrassing. I'm usually working on a Mac, and create PDFs that work just fine, at least for the most part (though not with anchor links). Then again, if someone prints them out, it helps that they see the whole link...

But there are some places, Docstoc among them, where my links don't seem to work at all.

I also now have access to a PC (but without Word) so I emailed myself my Word docs, opened them in Open Office, and then tried to turn them into PDFs with clickable links.

I have been told in lots of places that this is supposed to work, but it won't work when I try it

What am I missing? Are there specific settings that I need to use?

Also, as an alternative, I read about some free PDF creators, but one I tried to download crashed my Firefox! Any recommendations?

        Did you highlight the links and then insert the URL when you click the link icon?

        I have not made a link in OO and just left it, I always highlight and drop the URL in.

          I did. But the resulting links didn't open a new page

          Maybe I have a defective copy?

    As others have indicated, after highlighting the text to be hyperlinked, click on the links icon and enter the URL in the top section.

    Make sure that you have chosen the TYPE of link required. For instance, select Web for internet links.

    At the bottom of the links window, enter the text which is to appear and then press the close button. That's it.

    When pressing the now active link, it should use your default browser to go to the internet address.

    Did a Google search for "Creating clickable links in Open Office" and found this one

    Hyperlinks and URLs - OpenOffice.org Wiki

    Once you have your links created make your PDF

      I use Nitro PDF Reader to make PDF documents. First, I create the document using MS Word, and then print it using Nitro PDF Reader. It will then create a PDF file. You can even add a security password to prevent copying and printing.

    Elizabeth, you might do better with NeoOffice Home

    Hi Elisabeth,

    If you are able to make the hyper link in the text document, but you are finding that it is not working after you upload it to Docstoc, it's because the link only works after the document is actually downloaded from Docstoc. At least that has been my experience.

    In other words, you will want to type it into your document as a website URL www.myawesomewebsite.com and then hyperlink that so that when it is viewed in the search engine window, that people can use the URL to go directly to your website but it won't be clickable.

    I hope this part makes sense.

    Or if I am totally off base on what your question actually was, then ignore this answer and use the other suggestions on how to use OpenOffice and then use the chain link icon to make your URL, and then convert it into a PDF. I think that part has been explained pretty well.

      Hi Karen,

      thanks for your help. Yes, that's exactly what's happening. Once downloaded, the links work fine. But not on docstoc. And yes, I always use the full URL, just because a) depending on people's software, the links may or may not work, and b) if they're printed out, Anchor links not very helpful.

      I even encounter that in other people's PDFs who apparently aren't aware of the problem -- i.e., their anchor links don't open on my Mac, and so I have no idea where to go. Very frustrating!

      The thing is though that the links in other people's files on docstoc do work, so I want to make sure mine do too so people won't have to copy/paste.

      I'll give all the various options here a try and report back! And if I still have trouble, I'll take you up on your generous offer

          I just found this after doing a search for "links disabled in Docstoc" and I found this thread...hope it helps.

          and if you do a google search for "links disabled in docstoc" in google, you will find a thread at the BacklinksForum (I hope this is acceptable to refer to)

          Apparently, they were allowed, then they disabled them, and then there were enabled. But some people are still having problems with it. So maybe you can contact Docstoc and see what the problem is. Some people think it's the font size.

          Hope this helps some more.

              Geesh, is my face red. I hate it when people don't read the whole post and respond to the wrong thing, yet I managed to do it anyway. I actually did read it but apparently read into it something that wasn't there...perhaps because I'd been fighting to get a clickable TOC in a document I was working on.

              Sorry about that and I hope one of the other posters solved the problem for you.

    I have an older laptop I used to use for this, and it had an odd glitch with OOo and hyperlinks. Not sure if it's a recreation of that problem or if it's a DocStoc thing as mentioned above. Anyway, here's what I did:

    Create the link like you usually do. Then right-click over it and select "Edit Hyperlink." Make sure the correct link appears, and then click Apply, and then Close. That always worked for me.
