Hi all,

What are the various duplicate content issues I should be on the look out for, when using the WordPress platform? Please explan what they are and how I could prevent them from occuring in the first place.

Thanks,

Terrence Taitt

When you set up your sitemap on the blog, don't let google index category and topic pages.

    Otherwise, you will be fine.

The Duplicate Content Filter only affects same domain content.

        Terrence,

        Here's the way it works...

If you're focusing on things like Duplicate Content penalties you're focusing on the wrong things.

In other words, your energies are being put towards things with little to no ROI. You can't move forward with that mindset.

Your chances of being harmed by a Dup Con penalty are only slightly better than winning the lottery.

        Move forward, not sideways.

          ^^^ This - exactly.

(In fact I think the lottery might even be "favourite", actually).

It simply isn't something you need to be aware of, or to think about, at all.

      Bill:

That might not be a feasible solution for people who design/build their sites with a "siloed" structure.

Many people who do this spend more time backlinking to category/topic pages, because gettting enough quality, relevantly-anchored backlinks to those pages can help cut down on the amount of backlinks one needs to indivdual posts. So, of course, the last thing you'd really want to do in that case is force/instruct Google to overlook or dismiss those pages, ensuring they'd never amass and/or pass any PageRank / link-juice or whatnot.

In any case, providing you're ony displaying excerpts (and not full posts) on those category/topic pages, you shouldn't have any problems at all with Google favouring them over your individual posts, I think.

Just don't duplicate full pages/posts (and if you have to, use canonical URLs to let Google know which version of the page is the original), and there shouldn't ever be any issues.

    Bill has it right.

In any case, Google has said (not that I always believe Google) that they are getting better and better at determining what "negative" duplicate content there is -- that would be things like scraping from other sites (not having content from your own site available via various doors). In a general way, I believe that. (I never completely believe Google, btw. Their history of lying to webmasters is long.)

Google is very aware of the the Wordpress platform, and they have no problem figuring out what's what. Matt Cutts has even said that they take into consideration the larger platforms and how they're structured. And even if they didn't, you wouldn't get your site "penalized," you would simply not get an extra bump from that same piece of content in a different place on your site.

That said, people say things like "no-follow" your tag cloud. I don't. And you know what? I get search traffic from Google via my tag archives.

So as Bill said, focus on the big things. If you build a popular site, you will probably even see a positive return from duplicate content (as I have with my tag archives ... and the site I'm referring to isn't even very popular).

    None.

I know from another thread of yours that you don't have your site set up yet, you didn't install WordPress yet...
So, why are you wasting your time asking questions that don't relate even remotely to what you need to do?

Go and work on your site. Don't read and, especially, don't believe all the BS you find on the net (e.g. the "duplicate content myth").
Better go and start working on your WP site... and if you have that much time spend it on learning your new tool, WP
