Weird Blog Comments - What's Going On?

I started a blog about a month ago and kept it in a "search engine blocked" mode until last week.

Within the past three days, six people have commented on one single post.

Here's the weird part:

When I track back to where they originated, it points to an EZA article that is not mine and has nothing to do with the topic of my blog.

Another one is from a Squidoo lens which, again, has nothing to do with my blog.

All the comments seem to focus on one post only.

Is this normal?

It seems like they're trying to do some backlinking because the comments are rather strange (or they could be foreigners).

This is my first "real" blog other than a personal one for family so I'm rather puzzled.

This sounds pretty normal to me, most people who do this do not care what your blog is about or what people are doing there...they simply want traffic.

    Regardless of the quality.

Handy hint of the day for all blog and forum posters, CARE ABOUT YOUR COMMENTS!! (Not only placing affiliate links everywhere)

One well placed link with a insightful and intelligent comment on a blog is worth a thousand spam comments all over the place...if people like what you have to say they will maybe check out your site and convert.

Not a hope in hell if you do not do this...

I am a retired forum mod elsewhere and I saw it everyday when hundreds of bots would descend simply to spam links everywhere, they do not get past the front door and they are wasted...why do people waste their time on such strategies?

      Ditto...

Something Sparhawke said needs to be repeated, lest it be lost in the shuffle.

I don't place spam comments, so I can't verify the 1000:1 ratio , but I can tell you that I'm still getting the odd visitor from comments I left on quality blogs months ago, some more than a year.

Make a valuable comment and discreetly drop a relevant link, and it can pay off for a long time -- without worrying about the Google gods...

    Sounds like spam.

If you're on wordpress, make sure you activate Akismet spam blocker. It won't stop spam completely, but it will eliminate much of it...

Akismet is asking for payment if your blog has promotional content.

My blog does, but not blatantly as it is not an IM blog.

I use WP Spam Free but maybe I should start paying for Akismet?

I don't recomend Akismet they ask $50 monthly for up to 5 blogs.
    Rediculous price.
Maybe a lot less for only 1 blog but who has just 1 blog?

It sounds like spam to me bro - have a look and see if you spot backlinking and the keywords - this could put you onto a profitable niche

    Hakim,

Edit: about paying to remove spam - there is really no point, your are the admin and removing spam comments is a pretty easy task. Just add 10mins into your daily routine for this task and you will stay on top of it.

Based on your description, I would regard these comments as spam. If you agree, it is time to delete them. Has this continued happening since you first posted this update/question? Thank you.

Yes, I got two more comments on the same post.

I think you're right, I will go and delete them.

I don't know how these people found my blog. I just went "live" about 5 days ago. I did no articles or backlinking...?

I have had the same trouble on my one month old WP blog. I had installed a simple free plugin to help moniter comments, but it wasn't good enough, so I did start using Akismet. I got it for one blog and it costs me $5.00 a month. Then I started a second blog and wanted to use it again. Akismet asks you for an API key. Since I had gotten one for my first blog, I decided to just type the same key into the second blog, since the next payment level for multiple blogs is $50.00 a month. It DID work, I am using the same API key on more than one blog. At this point it seems to be working .
    Good Luck!

Those blog comments are probably from spammers trying to get their links out there. You can either ignore them or delete them.
