Ridiculously Stupid Opportunity

Granted, I haven't given this much thought but...

Check this out - the BBC are closing about 200 of their websites.. the revenue/traffic might not be enough to keep a company the size o' the BBC interested, but the fallout could make a few smart marketers pretty happy if they can optimize their sites for the same keywords. I dunno.. a ton of people looking for new sites sounds like an opportunity.

Haven't found (or even looked for) a full list of sites that are closing, those in the football, teens, video niches etc, willing to target the the traffic could benefit.

200 site closures + surfers looking for a new home = cha-ching.

OK, around 300 people are gonna lose their jobs through this but when one door closes, another one opens. Who knows, maybe they'll end up working for a couple of Warriors.

It seems like a waste to just shut down these sites. I'm wondering why they wouldn't try pawning them off individually or in a deal somehow.

Hey, if you can somehow channel all these soon to be semi-homeless surfers to come to your site then you have some sweet opportunity.

But how can you really top the BBC?

I figured they would just 301 redirect those old domains to the primary domain.

If I were in their shoes, that is exactly what I would do.

Cnet does the domain redirects on every domain they purchase.

Owning the domain is so cheap, I cannot imagine that they would be stupid enough to let them go.

Hundreds of websites will be closed by the BBC with the loss of 360 jobs as the broadcaster cuts its online budget by 25 per cent, it has announced.

Perhaps something else to consider is the underlying ramifications that caused this first shoe to drop.

Perhaps ad revenues are down to point they aren't worth the trouble to keep staff in place on a corporate level.

A 25% budget cut is a major harbinger.

You won't find any ads on the BBC website because it is funded by a TV licence tax levied on everyone who owns a TV set, or device capable of receiving TV broadcasts, in the UK (subject to a few exceptions).

The BBC gets its revenue from licence payers, selling programs to other broadcasters and merchandise (DVD, CD, tape) to consumers.

The reason for the cuts is because the UK Government has frozen any more increase in license revenues as part of the general package of spending cuts.

The BBC websites in question are not conventional websites as we would know them. They all come under the bbc.co.uk, bbc.com bbcworldservice.com domains. We would know them as catergories or sub-domains.

Those domains (if they let them go) would be worth a small fortune.. I wouldn't fancy my chances of getting hold of one. Doubt Joe Public would get a look in.

I'm thinking more about the search traffic from visitors looking for a new hang out.. if anyone remembers when OG shut down the fallout made (and continues to make) the smart guys mega bucks through the search traffic.
