Nothin Sexy About This

Disclaimer: This is not a rah rah post nor do I mean to start a, my plugin is better than yours, but a practical very basic opinion.

The other day there was a post made by someone, (who I am not singling out, I've seen it happen a few times), where He or She said that the WF wasn't helping any with the basics in IM.

I was dumbfounded, which admittedly is easy to do, but this one got me.

The basics of just about any direction you want to go in Internet Marketing, has been said on this forum for years, over and over.

You have a search function here, there are not one but two, one to search the entire forum, and one to search the thread. Think of it as the magic genie, ask it all.

In my humble opinion a lot of people are biting off far more than they can chew at once. Trying to go from the first grade straight to high school.

How do you eat an elephant?

If you are just starting out and you are having problems with the basics,
pick one niche or interest, in something that actually interests you, master that one site.
Live it, be it, have the inevitable technical problems that occur, figure out and learn, one piece at a time.
It will pay off later I assure you.

A lot of people here use Wordpress. And it's FREE.

Pick a theme, a simple theme, get it from the wordpress site, (less chance of unwanted coding,)
to start. FREE

My humble opinion is with Wordpress there are a few must have plugins,

I use, ( and I'm not endorsing one Name over the other, but the function itself)

A caching plugin, I happen to use Wp super cache. FREE
It will help your site load faster.
Matt Cutts himself said the speed of a site loading is a factor in ranking now.

A security plugin, I use WP Security Scan FREE.
There is more I could say about security, that I have learned, start with this.

A plugin to control pinging, I use MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer FREE,
although you do need to register an email, small price in my book.

Get yourself a ping list, they are all over, if you look. FREE

An SEO plugin, now this is one I do recommend. WordPress SEO, by Yoast.
I replaced 4 or 5 plugins with this one.
Thereby theoretically reducing load time.
May seem daunting at first, (see stupid elephant analogy), covers xml site map, titles, tags, robot txt,
site verification-google, bing, yahoo.
Also has many other functions. If you ever used headspace, he uses the same way to do titles, meta description, etc.
this has a function I hadn't seen before, puts a link or two back to your site if someone scrapes and or uses your rss feed.
Win. win, I suppose. FREE

A cleanup for your database, I use WP-Cleanup,
There are a few. FREE

Honorable mention

StatPress Reloaded, stats to use with, or instead of Google analytics. FREE

Simple Tags , also many functions, including related posts. FREE

SEO Friendly Images, if you have images will auto alt tags, so the search engines can read them. ( hint: use keywords). FREE

I put these in a folder and upload with Filezilla, FREE,
to all my WP sites. You can also upload from WP, without unzipping a zip file. I like having them all in a folder, so I don't forget any.

Other plugins that are specific for the aim of a particular theme or niche, I upload according to need.

Put this together, do basic keyword research, if you don't know how, that's another thing you can use the genie search box for.
and write away about something that interests you. Post at least once a day for awhile. Get links, there are many ways. Search genie.
Advice FREE

Please make mistakes, get up, dust off, and keep going. Do I sound preachy?

I have made every mistake that I talk about here.

Stay with it till you see results, with free resources, all most all available on the forum, then buy stuff, when you actually know what it's for.

Learn the basics and don't ignore seemingly obvious, basic advice.

Get rid of the get rich quick thoughts, and look at it as a way to get a little extra money at first.

Start small think BIG

By the way, you eat an elephant one bite at a time. In case you are from somewhere that you never heard that one.

Peace

And thanks for reading

And for the impatient ones who want to tackle that tough, big-money niche right out of the gates, think about this...

Do you really want to make your mistakes on the main stage, in full view of the world? Or would you rather iron out the kinks away from the spotlights?

There's a reason sports teams hold scrimmages and play exhibition game. There's a reason Broadway shows often open on the road in smaller venues.

The NFL just finished playing 4 exhibition games, 16 regular season games and 3 rounds of playoffs to determine the two teams playing for the league championship. Can you imagine if they played the Super Bowl right out of training camp?

John, you could seriously sell a ton of T-shirts with what you say in your signature

John thanks for getting my point, seems to me, to much pie in the sky,
not enough basic practical work, like searching what's in front of you.

@bryan Your wso was a pretty good example of basic work.
        I have it, good job.

Someone pointed out the search to me when I first got here.
Sounds kinda dumb now, it has helped to answer a lot of questions
I was a little overwhelmed with info overload to notice the basics.

Now hopefully I can return a giant favor.

I just wish when you first show up here there was a sticky or something offering the basics. I don't know ANYTHING about website design and even though wordpress is free it's not like you double click and it's on your computer. It looks like some scripting and stuff is involved, and that's, well, involving. Maybe not. I'll see when the whole thing is set up.
There is a sub forum dedicated to website design.

      Did I mention search ?

Not sure, let me go re read the original post.

      *SIGH*

Got here form your new thread and realized I had a thought on this one.

Sometimes, people just don't even know what questions to ask. They don't even know what the vocabulary is to from a question with the right words.

I see questions like that almost every day.

That isn't every question, for sure, or every questioner. Some folks just want someone else to do it for them, but not all people. And each person who comes here is unique. Their situation and amount of knowledge is different.

Drifting around, looking at things is a good way to start. Clicking all the buttons and searching around is a good way to get yourself familiar with how the forum works.

Exactly, hit it right on the head.

          Sometimes people forget that

In the old forum, I spent hours just looking at stuff and trying to learn the vocabulary. It was really like nothing I had ever seen before. I forget sometimes all the things I did not know.

I forget those things more when I am talking with people who are not online trying to earn from websites, regular folks who don't know what a browser is. Who still have AOL accounts, even though they curse at the dancing mortgage guy ads.
